Alan Smith

He wasn't joining the best team in the country;) Of course fans would be bitter about one of there players (who they considered to be one of them) joining there arch rivals. Wouldn't you feel the same if Fowler had gone to Everton? I know I would if Henry went to Spurs. (neither of those would happen, but you get the picture)

If Liverpool had been relegated then you can hardly hold it against him for wanting to join another club. He wouldn't have been popular, but I doubt there would have been supporters rejoicing at him breaking his leg. The problems at Leads were created at management/board level. If you want to blame anyone blame them. His choice of club was less than ideal but as I've said that was the best offer he got. He probably should have gone abroad if he got the chance.

He could have had the chance. Roma and Lazio were both interested but he wrote the possibility of going elsewhere, and the possibility of an inflated price, off by saying he wanted to join the same club he said he'd never join.

You don't understand why that is particularly irksome?

Are you even a football fan?

BTW the manyoo fans I know in the office and elsewhere understand perfectly my views and would feel the same had the opposite happened. Christ, most of them were happy when Haaland had to retire, and he'd done nothing wrong except be the recipient of an exceedingly dirty challenge that saw the dirty player injured...

A fan of football wouldnt care who he played for.

I dont pretend to understand the rivalry, as I dont, but I think its taking things too far when someone suffers an injury like Smith's and he gets a ribbing for it.

I'm all for players getting stick about things when they are actually playing, its part of the game, but in this case its unwarranted.

Of course they do. I'm not the only one who sees it this way, its just that I'm the only Leeds fan thats vocal in here. As I've said, with other teams in other situations there's plenty of members in here would feel the same way.

[edit]Slow edit there dude, its not unwarranted at all. He must've known what he was doing when he turned his back on Leeds fans. He'd be stupid to expect any sympathy from them.

As I said, think it would be different if Sol broke his leg 2 years after leaving Spurs? Would there have been an outpouring of affection for him from the white side of North London?

You're kidding yourself if the answer to that question is yes.

I think there's tinge if hypocrisy here. Money talks. Everyone here in Alan Smith's shoes would have gone to ManU regardless. I mean come on do you think he would turn down a move on principle, it was a buisness decision on his part, and in buisness as they say, 'thats buisness'. And as a professional he probably wanted to play at the best club in the world, on home soil.

As for the injury yeah i feel sorry for him, but, hes getting 24 hour care for the next 12 months. Your Sunday player gets a dirty sponge, AE in 2 hours, operation maybe 2 months, and physio once a week, and has to carry on working. So i dont feel that bad for him.

He shouldn't have said he would never join them before he went then, and he certainly shouldn't have said there was no rivalry there because we were in a different division!

A fan doesn't say that.

Where is the hypocrisy? I'd never play for them given the choice between them and Leeds.

[edit]I'll rephrase that. I'd never play for them. Especially if I had the chance to play for Leeds.

Absolutley correct. We were gutted (to a less extent) When Ince signed for Liverpool. He got stick and quite rightly so. The way he celebrated when he scored against us at the Kop was nothing short of criminal. Rivals are Rivals.

I don't mind any of that. What I object to is when Smith is branded worse of the lot by Leeds fans when quite clearly he isn't. Kewell being the prime example. He had the opportunity to sign for five clubs. Leeds was only ever going to let him goto UTD as the deal was it was a cash only deal. Smith has said as much and Leeds have never refuted So I guess I take him at his word.

If people want to use his transfer to Utd as vindication for not wishing him well then so be it. I think we all get caught up in a lot of Footballing myths about players. Lets not forget stories were circulating around OT after he signed that he had been spotted singing "whos that dying on the runway whos that dying in the snow" at some social club in Beeston two months before his transfer to UTD. So he wasnt welcomed with open arms. I would bet this has the same ammount of substance as He could have gone anywhere other than UTD.

All I'm saying is that when a player suffers an injury like that, there should be some sort of sympathy shown. When he's actually kicking a ball you can hurl as much abuse at him as you like, I couldnt give a stuff.

I'm just hoping we have a midfield by the time he comes back. Ruud may be tempted to leave this summer, it all depends if a big club actually places an offer for him instead of talking about it for 3 months in the papers. And with our somewhat limited funds, Ferguson will have to sell a few players to bring some quality into the team. Rossi and Park should feature a lot more in games for the remainder of the season, if they don't.....well it just sums Ferguson up really..

Ruud said in one of the papers last week he aint going anywhere as long as Rooneys playing for MU

I heard that, but if Madrid or Barcelona or one of the big Italian teams put in a £30million offer in for him, I somehow don't think the club would reject it. Personally I would sell Saha, he's a ticking time bomb waiting to get injured.

I'd reckon he would go for a lot more than that. In a good team he'd practically get 30 goals a season. And he's a fantastic goalscorer in the Champions League. £30million may be too much, but my point was if the money was that high, I seriously doubt that the club would reject it.

Saw the pictures of his leg today in the paper just after it happened, looked nasty. :(

He said he looked down and saw his leg pointing one way, and his ankle pointing to Hong Kong.

Well he's had a successfull operaton on it, so lets hope he makes a speedy recovery, and can get back to playing. :)

I hate the fact that this has happened, it may even cause him to retire if it doesnt heal properly, not only that..he is going to miss the World Cup unfortunately, also we have no decent Centre Midfielders fit , now that scholes is out for a while. Big Problem for United, hope he gets up on his feet again soon. :(

I understand why Gilly dislikes him, but I think the level he dislikes him is daft. Its not like he buggered off leaving his club in tatters to further his own career. He was pushed out and tryed to make the best of it for himself. Giving them £1.5m in the process.

And I don't think Ruuds going anywhere soon. I think hes grown to love Utd as much as I do.
