*** Alien: Covenant ***

Watched Prometheus, Alien and Aliens the other week again. I really don't mind the Prometheus film, it's not a corker like the original Alien films but it's nowhere near as bad as Alien 3 or something. Hoping this next instalment is on the money though

I'm not exactly excited about Blomkamp's Alien movie...if it had been announced after District 9 i'd have been hyper ecstatic.

However since then he made the utterly terrible Elysium and the passable Chappie.

I wonder who Sharlto Copley will play in his Alien movie ;)

I liked Chappie, not seen Elysium didn't look interesting enough for me.

:D

I hope so Burr a trailer would be great.

I think Prometheus's trailer, particularly it's soundtrack and the slowly building warning siren really worked well:

The viral videos and marketing also created great interest which I guess ultimately did leave some disappointed. Let's hope Fox has learnt from that hopefully allowing Ridley to further the universe in the way we all hope:cool:

On a side note has anyone else seen Noomi Repace's shooting test with Rafe Spall playing the part of David? I can't post a link as it has rude words:o:D but it's worth a watch. It reminds me of an 80's episode of Doctor who:cool:

That music is cool, i think it's a mix of the original Alien and Inception? Not seen the shooting test, will probably hunt that down at some point.

You're not alone... I love the assembly cut. Could have been a great film, but I'll settle for flawed classic that was "Foxed". Gits.

I've high hopes for Covenant, so we'll see...

The Assembly cut is soooo much better than the original. Paul McGann's character makes much more sense in that cut to.

The XENOMORPH as Giger intended?

Images from the Covenant set of the clapperboard showing images from the Necronom IV suggest we may see a more translucent form closer to Giger's concepts:cool:

There's also been some other stills from the set showing a 'DAVID' with dark hair.

Problem with this artwork as I see it is this.

With a huge back head sticking out, when the alien turns its head in a doorway it's going to bang the back of its head every time. Not ideal. It doesn't have eyes in the back of its head, and it's a bad idea.

Wristbands? Is this an alien in the cult of Karbala?

Pipe work, is it half alien half predator shell already? Looks like it has exhausts on its back..

Plus it has like.. Hands...

What they needed all along was just a bigger blue screen obviously.,.

I think you're trying too hard to find something to complain about. Plus, it's always had the long head and the pipework.

This.

The pipe-esque protrusions are really a product of Giger's bio-mech art style. The Alien wasn't designed with practicality in mind, it's a more psychologically driven creation.

Also the alien across the franchise has repeatedly shown that it is not a "fixed" form, it's affected by it's environment and hosts.

I wouldn't be too surprised if one of the reasons the original Alien didn't have any translucent areas was simply at the time it would have been too difficult or expensive to have done so, whilst the black glossy/wet look was both easier to attain, more practical for filming and cheaper.

This is clearly seen in Alien 3 when it becomes a four-legged Alien after impregnating the Dog. It appears to absorb some of the DNA of the host. In the extended edition of 3 the Alien Facehugger actually impregnates an Ox.

The Alien in the original film had NO issues moving through limited ducts and even hiding itself despite the head.

Easiest way to stay alive when facing an Alien. Stay in the daylight because the costume looks crap in the sun! :)

I saw the A3 full version years before it was ever released.

The story went the sister of a school friend was dating someone who worked on the set. He managed to get hold of this version and we watched it before the official release.

Also regarding Resurrection, I'm sure when I watched it at the cinema, when they take the queen out of Ripley Clone, as the cord is cut, she wakes up, grabs the medics arm and snaps it up. I haven't seen that on any further releases of the film.

Resurrection is rip off of the comic story which starts just after the end of Aliens. It's a shame they didn't use the story lock stock and ignore A3 or explain it away somehow. Not that I dislike A3, I actually like it a lot. I can even see past Resurrections failings and enjoy it. The underwater scenes are really good. It's just heavily let down by the queen/alien/human thing at the end.

I do wonder whether A5 depends on the success of Covenant. Also, how to explain why Ripley, Hicks and maybe Newt have aged while in stasis.

:eek::eek::eek::eek: (:eek: INFINITY)

Giger's work can be said to be: disturbing, terrifying etc and this in itself can be a problem for some but I think most would agree the Xenomorph and all it's forms are at the apex of Science Fiction protagonists!!!

....gets off high horse....:o:p

I'll leave this to Ripley...

Harsh but fair Ripley...:p

(I've been wanting to post that clip for ages thanks for the opportunity Running:D)

Ripley didn't mean it really she's just a bit grumpy from all that time in stasis!!!:p

Watching Alien now. Alien /aliens and Terminator/t2 films are the absolute pinnacle of Sci Fi movies. Nothing really comes close. Maybe The Thing is up there too but that generation of movies puts current efforts to shame.

Phenomenal film. Totally fantastic.

I hope they can capture some of the brilliance of originals.

Don't forget Predator. :p - Which incidentally is getting another film in the series too.

I always think Arnie's Total Recall belongs in that clutch of movies. It has the same kind of look/feel about it.

They also show that animatronics and good set design is more timeless than all the cgi stuff we get given these days.

^ This.

I'm a big Aliens fan, but I didn't like Alien 3 and Resurrection was an abomination. Prometheus was "meh", wasn't bad but wasn't particularly good either. Word round the campfire at the time was that Alien 3 test audiences amounted to a bunch of Californian teenage surfer types who asked questions like "why are there so many British guys in this?".
But the main reason I disliked Alien 3 is that it obliterated all of James Cameron's careful character crafting and story telling from Aliens. He took the time and energy to create these amazing characters and Alien 3 simply said "nope" and went off in another direction. We wanted to see Hicks, Newt and Bishop again, we cared about them.
We didn't care about a bunch of scruffy murderers and rapists even if one of them used to advertise Tetley teabags.

I refuse to talk about Resurrection. Doctors orders.

Alien Res was waaay to much like a comic book for my liking. The 80's really was special for sci-fi/horror/action movies. My list of favourites probably being:

Aliens
Predator
The Thing
Robocop
Blade Runner

But even then there's lesser known stuff like Galaxy of Terror (which influenced Aliens believe it or not), The Peter Hyams movies: Outland and 2010, plus too many John Carpenter movies to mention + others... Good times.
