Alien: Isolation...

The main draw of the game, and why it was such a hit imo, was the fact you were basically helpless.

There was no hand holding 'go here' 'switch this' 'wait here' you basically were left to get through the game on your own having to work everything out yourself whilst under major distress!

One tip I would give you is use your crafting to make things that help you, noise makers (or whatever they are called) and flares are great distractions for slipping past problems.

The game is hard, if you think it's difficult now wait until you get to the Med Centre !! hahaha it will introduce a new level of WT@&%)"!! - The game is very rewarding when you get past a difficult situation, very immersive and the best atmosphere for a long time.

Personally I still think it's the best game I've played since Half Life.

I would also recommend you watch The Mighty Jingles trying a play through on youtube specially if you decide to stop playing. His general Alien knowledge and chit chat keeps you entertained whilst you laugh at how scared trying to get through it all.

Yeah, I kind of get all that. I do like the lack of hand-holding and the immersion, the sense of disorientation and fear. I certainly don't mind a high difficulty level in games either.

The only thing I dislike is having to replay 5-10 minutes of the game over and over again, especially when it can take a while to learn what you need to do at any given point of difficulty. It's the same reason I never play rogue-likes tbh. Repetition is just a turn-off for me. I find it immersion-breaking as well as frustrating.

I don't think even in any of the Dark Souls games there was a run to a boss that took as long as I've had to replay through at this relatively early stage (and least then you could feel you were levelling up, gaining souls and looting).

I probably won't give up just yet, but I think if I die a couple more times and have to replay the whole lockdown bit again a couple more times I won't be able to find the will to keep going.

Yeah some of the game areas will require you to play and repeat a few times but in general, the save points are not that far apart. I always told myself that if you haven’t seen a save point in a while, you’ve probably gone past it. But don’t give up. It’s a fantastic experience to be a part of.

I played it on easy, not ashamed to admit:) Still died a few times in difficult places, but enjoyed the game so much that ended up completing it and all its Ripley DLCs. Easy was still hard, but not too hard. Other than that, keeping to the shadows, walking and not running, using noisemakers to lure mr Alien into the opposite direction from where you're going and moving in short bursts from cover to cover - all of these worked well for me.

Top, top game, one of the very best games ever.

Hmm... might try again later tonight if I get time.

Anyone got any hints for the part where
the xeno has just killed the gun-wielding humans in the room where you picked up the access tuner? He seems to lurk right in front of the elevator door and from the balcony I have no way of telling where it is without revealing myself. I have no noise-makers that people refer to - only one flashbang I think.

Bit embarrassing to be asking for help so early into a game, but it takes me a while to get to this point, with a longish cut scene en route and I find the repetition irritating when I have no idea what to do after playing through all that time.

You know you can "lean/peek" right? You can do that quickly without the Alien or other enemies seeing you.

The lobby is a semi-active area where the Alien can come out and play, but it shouldn't stay in one place. Depending on the game difficulty you are playing on, it will pop out and hunt you for a few minutes before returning to the vents again. That said, it can trick you by using the vent to move locations in the same room/area or even exit the same vent again.

If the Alien goes inside the vent and it doesn't come out again, you got a few minutes to do stuff.

The Alien works like like a hourglass in the end, it hunt you for a few minutes till all the sand is gone, then it gives you a few moments of rest before repeating the process.

If you using headphones, you should be able to listen for the Alien pretty easy and tell it's direction, it's very loud when it's moving.

If you got no distractions like flares, then you have a few choices you can do to.

1. Have some balls and sneak to the lift while the Alien is moving around.
2. Hide till the Alien goes inside the vent.
3. You can use the wrench to bang a wall, which can make the Alien come investigate. Make sure you have a escape path and don't hang around, once you banged that wall, time to go.

You will find tons of flares in this game, I recommend using them if you have a tough time, otherwise like 99% of the players that I seen play this game, you will end up finishing the game without using any and cursing the game for being so hard when you not using the tools provided.

His behaviour is not scripted so he is not tied to the door or anything else. Throw a flashbang from the balcony into the far corner downstairs and then and walk towards the goal. Flares are scattered in a lot of places, strange how you've managed not to bump into them so far, but they are not necessary

Thanks! All good tips. This game is rather different in approach than others it seems. It turns out I did have a flare after all! I don't remember finding it, but I chucked it to the other end of the room, and that did work! So I finally made the elevator and pushed the button (with a pounding heart!).

Headphones a good point too. I've plugged them in now. It's also more atmospheric.

Also... um, no I didn't realise you could peek! :o Newb error!

Yeah, like you both say, I had that wrong. I'd tried this room twice and both times the alien had just lurked in the same place and then come up the stairs to where I was hiding so I'd assumed, obvously incorrectly, that its behaviour was pre-determined. The last time I did notice it was lurking in the middle of the room... just as I started down to the lift, it turned around and walked towards where I was going! Eeek! Thankfully lobbing the flare distracted it for just long enough.

So, yeah, got to admit that was a great gaming moment after all that!

Cheers, guys!

Damn I'm going replay this when my shiny new OP rig arrives :p

Glad you got past that part @strumpusplunket, I have to be honest and admit I crawled around for at least 95% of my play through hahaha! There wasn't a table or locker I didn't hide under/inside during the whole game.

Must try to find my old sweetfx and graphic settings for this, it was truly stunning in parts.

I played this upon its release on ps4, but never did dlc am tempted to pick it up on my PC now I have a shiny rig :) shame it will never get a sequel it deserves, the best alien game we have had since the original avp2

Absolute gem of a game simply because you are helpless and it has so many nods to the first Alien film (Alien and Aliens are my top films of all time) Graphics are spot on, the sounds, the atmosphere. I got it with all the DLC's. I will give it another go on hardest difficulty one day. That ending though :o

The end credits theme was a joy to listen to after completing the game too:

Man, those synthetics are a PITA as well, aren't they!
Sneak past or stun them with electric prod/EMP and clobber with the wrench. Revolver, shotgun etc work too but attract attention.

Personally I still think it's the best game I've played since Half Life.

I share the sentiment, it is one of my all time favs

They can't follow you inside vents, if you get chased by a few, hide in there till they go away.

Other tactic to deal with the "normal" ones is if you want to get passed one or get trapped by one, shoot him once with the pistol (this pauses his animation/stuns him) so he can't get you, allows you to run pass him, then you can just calmly walk away, benefit of doing that is speed and saves ammo, since on Hard/Nightmare mode, they require about 7 shots to the head.

The upgraded working joes can be dealt with the same way, but with the shotgun and at the very moment they try to "grab" you.

You can use the vent tactic to kill them slowly if you got no weapons and have the time to do it. Sneak behind a working joe and smack him in the back of the head 2 times (you might be lucky to get a third) before you have to run away and hide in the vent. Repeat this about 2-3 times and you can kill them without any damage.

Ohter good tactic if you find a working joe blocking your way and no way around, you can lure him to a bigger space/room to get around him. Just get his attention and walk away from him allowing him to slowly chase you, once you in that big room or space, you can run around him and back to your objective!
