Aliens : Colonial Marines - FPS ( They're back ! )

Awful game. Not even worth £3.74 IMO.

I bought this for £3.74 in the sale for both me and my mate so we could play co-op. We finally got round to playing it this weekend.

I fully expected it to be awful after the bashing it's received on here (well everywhere :D).

We got about half way through the campaign. I think we did 5 or 6 missions in co-op. Not to mention some Alien vs. Marine one on one deathmatch :)

I was pleasantly surprised, it's actually quite fun if i'm honest. It's not as atmospheric as the Original AvP (what a game that was) but it does get tense in places. We did jump at a few points! You also have to be mindful of ammo as you can run out if you're trigger happy. I also liked the nods to the movies.

I have a few small gripes with the game.
The alien controls for the deathmatch aren't fluid. Changing between walls and objects is a bit clumsy. You definitely have an advantage as the marine.

The menu system to start a co-op game is too complicated. Once you have worked it out it's ok but they could have improved this.

Now for my main gripe. I'll spoiler it as it is about a specific level.

I think it's level four or five where you're captured by an alien. You have to sneak out of the hive without making a sound. The animation for the aliens that are walking around is appalling. I don't know how they ever left it like that! They look like miniature T-Rex's that need the toilet :D:D

I'm quite frankly surprised it got so badly panned. Perhaps they have heavily patched it since release and i've been lucky to come to the party late?

I wouldn't want to have paid full price but for £4 it's a decent co-op game.

Agreed ^^ it aint too bad at all. On ultimate badass difficulty its nice seeing the tracker light up with a ******* of the mothers coming at ya.

near the end now on the mission make a stand at weapon bay/operations. a shame you cant weld the doors shut (or only some doors i guess)

Also after watching videos of bughunt multiplayer im a bit less impressed...i thought it would be basically horde mode. (gow) but you can buy your life back apparently if you have enough credits (you get credits for a kill) so now i think its nothing like trying to survive in horde...maybe a gimped version...

Yeah I played this last week. I paid 8 dollars for version that includes all DLCs.

And damn, what a fantastic ride it was. Movie environments are greatly recreated, the game is atmospheric and lot of fun to play. I played in singleplayer and AI was ok. And Stasis Interrupted explained the storyline lot better too. They released over 8GB of patches - those patches improved graphics tenfold and eliminated most bugs too.

I played bughunt for two hours and it was lot of fun too.
Also levels like Nostromo and Fury 161 are cool.

Mind you, the story did make me laugh out loud sometimes it was that badly written. Didn't stop me doing and enjoying the Aliens tourist thing, but bloody hell, that was some truly awful writing :o

Mostly from it being nothing like the version they showed at events prior to its release.

And there's the true source of most of the rage - people fell for all the hype (yet again  ) and pre-ordered in droves at full price, and then got upset when they found out they'd been suckered. Again. When waiting 12 hours for a few user reviews would have saved them a lot of hassle.

Doesn't stop it being a perfectly decent game that I paid £2.50 for and got a lot of entertainment out of.

And the most ironic of all, the version available now, patched one, does actually look better than the demos they showed before release. But the bad launch is forever stuck in people's minds. They really messed that launch up completely.

I don't understand, you're saying people got suckered and yet it's still a perfectly decent game?
No it's not. There's a reason you got it for £2.50, it's ****, people know it's ****, even the developers know it's ****.
For the people you say got suckered, they have a perfectly reasonable expectation to get a game in a finished state and not the buggy, graphical mess that this was released in, this is probably why Sega was furious with Gearbox and also why the game lost almost 65% of it's userbase within a week.

Each to their own, but IMO, it's got no atmosphere, is one of the least proficient FPS games I've ever played, and I'd consider myself an Aliens fan.

Subjected myself to it on a friends PC, desperately trying to find some redeeming factor. In the end, I didn't even want to play it for free.

Completely agree with this post. It is one of the worst games I've played in recent years and there really was no atmosphere, if you want atmosphere in an aliens game and want graphics on par with this game then play AvP1 from 1999ish.

I compared the game running on my PC connected to 55" plasma TV, in its latest version, and it looks graphically as good or better than the E3 demo. I had LASIK, no need for glasses :p

No it doesn't. To suggest it does is utterly ridiculous.

It is, and remains several degrees below the graphical fidelity show in the preview vids.

This is the E3 demo

The game itself does not look worse than this, and in some aspects is better now. Pulse Rifle model looks better, sound is also correct, whereas in the demo it is completely wrong.

You are mistaken. The demo/make believe footage is far better in all aspects compared to the turd that gearbox released. No amounts of patching/grain/promises will change that. Glad you felt it was worth £2.50. I downloaded it and still felt ripped off.

This has probably been posted somewhere in thread but I couldn't find it - A direct comparison of the Demo scenes vs the same scenes in the full game (the demo looks amazing, the game doesn't) -

This is from the unpatched, launch version, which looked HORRIBLE.
But the patches (more than 8GB) added:

- textures 4x times resolution
- diffuse and bump textures
- more light points
- more fog zones
- color grading
- chromatic abberation
- ambient occlusion
- better shadows

The game that exists now looks so much better, plus AI was improved and bugs mostly eliminated.

Just check out the texture difference:

For an FPS the game was not to bad, I enjoyed the shooting part. Damn shame about what they did with the story though. I played the patched version about 2 weeks ago.
