Alienware announces the AW2725DF and AW3225QF (worlds first 4k 240hz and worlds first 1440p 360hz QD-OLED monitors - launches January 2024)

You can just run those games that flicker, at 120Hz, if needs be via the NV App setting for the game's exe. It's not a huge issue.VRR still will work up to 120fps obviously.

Exactly. Really is not a big issue. 120hz is still very good. Not like we are saying run it at 60hz. But you know, I would rather even do that on the odd occasion if that was the fix than go back to my old monitor :p

I assumed you got it for the better image quality. That's my main reason
:)

Agreed, was never too bad, but the point being made is dropping down to 144hz solved the issue. So dropping from 240hz to 120hz should make a difference.

Did you try dropping to 120hz to see if it made a difference?

As I recall DLDSR did make a decent difference. But yeah, not huge.

16:9 is life! Sell the 21:9 monitor already. Your friend is waiting to over pay when you are ready
:p

Imagine faffing around using both monitors. That's a faff and a half

Well yeah when games didn't load in the higher res. assets unless 4k+ etc. was detected or/and they have higher res. assets to benefit the most from 4k then yes, primarily for the IQ but as discussed before, outside of this, the difference imo is small and when using DLDSR, it's incredibly hard to notice outside of side by side comparisons.

I never ran my aw34dw at 144hz either for the same reason of noticing the extra benefits of 175hz over 144hz (and also not being bothered by its flickering)

It is a bit of a faff if games don't have an option to change display in game menu but easy workaround is just to use steam big picture and set the aw34dw as the main monitor when in that mode so not as much faff as DLDSR or changing refresh rate.

Not dropping to 120hz  I would sooner sell the monitor than do that :p

I'm surprised monitors such as this are allowed to be sold without giving epilepsy warning before buying/turning them on tbh.

I bet I will notice, still sitting in its box not opened it yet by the way

Too much faffing about mate. Just sell the 4K monitor and go back to potato 1440p and 175hz :p

So you refuse to even see if it solves the issue? Will take hardly any time and not like once you go 120hz you get locked in. You can just go back to 240hz again

It is a single player game at the end of the day and you are not even hitting 100fps so there would not even be a bloody big difference anyways.

Honestly though, the aw34dw is the better "overall gaming" monitor, the problem with the aw32 and 4k is you need to have the right games and so on for it to really shine and truly stand out compared to the aw34dw, reminds me a bit of back in the day when 4k came about where it was a big fat meh, although obviously things have improved more now since more games actually do use higher res. assets. One of the things that I like the most about the aw32 is having more screen real estate area but this will be solved when the 39" 21.9 comes along. The whole VRR flicker thing really has ruined certain games and as I noted before, true gsync is just simply superior but again, I am far more sensitive to things like this and micro stutter than most people. Give me a flicker free gaming experience be that on 1080, 1440p or whatever over 4k etc. any day of the week. It's similar to why I will never use FSR as the issues it has are just as immersion breaking.

It might very well resolve it but I am not going to stick to using 120hz mode. One of the main selling points and why most people buy this monitor is for the 240hz aspect, if dropping to 120hz well then might as well just go and buy another monitor  You just have to google aw32 flicker reddit and see how many people encounter this and most have ended up selling the monitor on or returning it. I don't really understand why TLOU is affected so bad as the fps is 100+, the scenes aren't particularly dark/gray either. I do wonder if nvidias official driver update to support the monitor will help reduce this but given every oled monitor has scored awfully except the aw34dw, it is unlikely.....

The 4K and the 1440uw both have their strengths and weaknesses. I totally see why Nexus would prefer the uw3423dw. Onmore demanding games, it is overall a smoother experience (less microstutters etc), with less vrr flicker and isnt so dependent on having the highest tier gpu for a smooth experience. I use a 4090, but have experienced the 4k oled vrr from 2080ti, 3090 and now 4090. The vrr flicker was definitely more of an issue in the 2080ti//3090. it's easy for people first experiencing 4k vrr oled with a 4090 to not see it as much of an issue.

No chance. If that were even remotely true ultrawide is life mrk would not have got rid of it and upgraded :p

Was never meh. People just did not like the huge drop in fps.

Lol. It would be on the odd occasion though? I do not understand the issue?

Makes no sense saying the aw34dw is the better gaming monitor which is only 175hz 100% off the time and being happy to use that when the 4K superior panel is 240hz 99% and in the odd occasion drop to 120hz which is no slouch.

Let's hope so. Who knows might eventually get a firmware fix too. Whenever expected that on the ultrawide and it happened.

Yup I fully expect when I get the 5080/5090 for it to be less of an issue, just annoying that when pushing 100+ fps and not even in dark gray/black scenes, it still seems to be a persistent issue in this game. It really does baffle me when people say free/adaptive sync is just as good as gsync ultimate.

No chance. If that were even remotely true ultrawide is life mrk would not have got rid of it and upgraded :p

Was meh to me :p It's far more beneficial nowadays because of TAA and higher res assets being used. Back in the day, it was purely a better anti aliaser, of course the performance was the main issue too though.

It's the same reason I bought the aw32 as I did not want to faff about with DLDSR on the aw34dw anymore.

Well as you know, 21.9 is the biggest reason, it is simply more immersive AR and a far more enjoyable experience, 4k when it shines is "wow, that's nice" where as 21.9 in basically everything is "wow, this is nice". I have got used to 16.9 and largely because the 32" has a bigger screen area so can make do and appreciate more detail etc. because of this but I do find myself missing 21.9 in most games I'm playing. In terms of purely the issue at hand though i.e. vrr flicker, the aw34dw is simply superior here especially in this TLOU game, of course if 4k made a massive difference to this game then I would probably be more willing to sacrifice to 120hz or/and drop settings but it doesn't imo.

It is strange why nvidia still haven't got a driver update out for this as iirc, the others 32" 240hz monitors have.

His problem is he is on a 3080

The even funnier part is, as we always said, the issue with that card will be the performance way more than vram :D

Once Nexus gets his 5080 things will get much better for him.

Hopefully I can set mine up some point today and have a quick go :D

You shouldn't be getting vrr flicker when pushing 100 fps though, that's the problem..... As per my testing in my cp 2077, you could mostly reduce the vrr flicker by just hitting 70 fps but for whatever reason, this does not seem to be the case with TLOU, of course, maybe it could be resolved when pushing 200+ fps but then you'll need to reduce settings massively (which would even go for the 4090 too) in which case, what's the point when can just play it maxed out without issue on the aw34dw lol......

We just need manufacturers to solve the vrr issue on oleds or better yet, dump the ****** standard adaptive sync and switch to true gsync for those that want a great VRR gaming experience.

Agreed it should not be an issue. At least it is a rare instance. If it was not the case you and mrk would not have kept the monitor and tore it w new one. That says all I need to know :D

Pretty sure mrk would have if he didn't have a 4090 ;) :p

Just for a laugh, I limited the FPS to 50 which is outside the VRR range and wowzers! It's not pretty

Would never go below 48fps anyway. Not in 2024 anyway. Non issue.

Just like your vrr issue will be once you finally upgrade. At worst case frame gen would solve it. I can see new dlss 4 offering even more fake frames option :p

Neither would I but as we all know, unfortunately there can be games where the fps will dip for no reason (which is more common than not as shown by DF in recent titles, even on a 4090)

Has this been your experience?

How about you @mrk do you get tearing?

I would be surprised personally if it happened more than once in a blue moon.

I will know soon enough anyway. Just need to get the time to install the monitor.

Some games it has happened yeah, obviously not common, when I said recent titles, I'm referring to black myth and outlaws where Alex has shown this.

You don't get screen tearing btw, with adaptive sync, there is like a low frame rate compensation so as to avoid this, that's the terminology for freesync anyway:

The achilles heel of this monitor.

I've yet to see any tearing on any game since going GQ-OLED - As long as GSYNC is displayed on the top right corner so I know it's active.

Cool :D

Have you experienced it or just going of what others are saying? :p

I always go by what my own experiences. If I am not having an issue and it is something that happens in a handful of scenarios then I could not give two ***** about it personally.

Going to go unpack and the monitor and try it out shortly :D

I might even go install TLOU and run it at 120hz. Bet it fixes the issue
