Hi all, this method seems to be working for me so far:
https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/comments/1gxutv4/for_the_love_of_god_please_tell_me_how_to/
In summary:
1. Uninstall AWCC.
2. Uninstall the Dell telematics/management application that is installed alongside AWCC as it loads several memory hogging processes at start up. I can't remember what it's called exactly, you will spot it though.
3. Go to the 'C:\Program Files\Alienware' folder (or create it if it's not there), disable inheritance (convert to explicit) and then remove write permission from ALL users for that folder.
4. Do the same for 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell'
I have tried to run the downloaded installation package from the file repository manually for verification and it fails to install.
Update: I can see a log file that keeps updating every time it tries to install: C:\Windows\Temp\AWCCInstallationManager. This is literally every time the monitor wakes! A user on that reddit thread claims that it had increased to 24MB in a few weeks, so you may want to delete it periodically too. When I get a chance I will try a few more things. I'm wondering if this update could be blocked through group policy. Anyhow, I would prefer a smarter way of blocking this particular update.
I have also read that taking ownership and deleting the 'AWCCInstallationManager.exe' in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\awcc... can also stop the install. However, from reading, some say that the exe will eventually be recreated in a new folder. So perhaps for now using both methods concurrently would be helpful? Maybe doing this too will at least stop the install attempts and log generation?
Also, if you use the Dell Display Manager application (I do), the above 'fix' does not impact that at all as it's installed in: C:\Program Files\Dell\Dell Display Manager 2
Unfortunately, as several of us have discovered, removing the USB cable does not stop recognition of this monitor by Windows in pushing this Dell bloatware via WU
