Arsenal are likely to bid for Ajax pair Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen after Arsene Wenger was assured by the club's board that funds will be made available to him for a significant bid.

Most of that will rely not on transfer funds, but offloading players, people WILL want Vela and Bendtner and it looks like they'll probably go really cheap(had we played either properly we could either be playing them or selling them for a real fee). But Squillaci and Chamakh, Gervinho and Mertesacker could be really difficult to offload due to wages. Chamakh seems disinterested in leaving despite a couple clubs wanting him because, well, he's on a stupid wage.

Erikson looks genuinely impressive, another CB I couldn't give much of a damn about, we've taken top CB after top CB and made them look average, the system is at fault, till that's fixed we're just throwing money away, Squillaci, Djourou, Mertesacker. Koscielny and Verm are TOP defenders, yet they get made fools of by a poor system, poor full backs and something fundamentally wrong. Mert doesn't look half as good as Kos or Verm yet when he's in for either of them we concede the same goals in the same way and pretty much the same rate, the quality of CB is not at fault. I like Verm and Kos, neither are as good as Gallas at his best, when he was in the team, same thing, same types of goals conceded, same mistakes, same amount conceded. We've changed countless CB's, but not the system, lets change the system before dumping another 10-20mil down the drain.

Left back who can defend, and sell the glass man(men), and Dos Santos before he's too old to leave and see's out a long contract without playing much. Really we need a top notch left back and a promising younger player as backup before we need a CB, even without fixing the system Gibbs isn't very good, horrific positioning, average at best going forwards and one of the most ridiculously injury prone players we've had.

Manchester United coach confirms Hazard chase

Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has admitted Eden Hazard is on Sir Alex Ferguson's wanted list.

Hazard is being chased by a host of clubs across Europe, with the Belgium international expected to leave Lille in the summer.

United, Manchester City and Tottenham have all watched the schemer in action as they weigh up moves for Hazard at the end of the season.

Hazard has previously admitted he was flattered by United's reported interest in his services and now Meulensteen has confirmed the 21-year-old is highly thought of at Old Trafford.

"The manager wanted to see (Eden) Hazard by himself. That's a sign he thinks it's an interesting player. We talked a lot about him," Meulensteen told Voetbal International.

"For a club it's important that you keep refreshing your squad.

"Hazard is a special talent, but it always takes a while. As (an) example, we followed David de Gea for a long time before we got him.

"Ferguson wants to know the character of the player. Because of that he's going to look himself for players. Hazard is 'the man' at Lille. Ferguson wanted to see if that had an influence on him."

Please god let it happen. :(

Why's it impossible that players would go to Citeh for ~footballing reasons~? Or, why does it have to be about money, if anyone chooses Citeh?

It doesn't, but for footballing reasons, going to Manchester United to replace the likes of Paul Scholes is going to be far more appealing than playing at City.

I think so, anyway.

I'd argue that he'd be more likely to win things, at Citeh, and those concerns should outweigh playing for a club with more trophies in the cabinet. I mean, players have very short careers, so they should make the most of them and base their decisions on winning stuff (unless they want to play for their childhood club, or whatever).

That's certainly one way of looking at it, but if Man Utd make the right transfers they shouldn't ever fall behind Man City in the near future.

Man City are hardly a team poised to take the world by storm at the moment, and it will take more than a season or two for that to change really.

Your point of view would apply far more to a team such as Barcelona or Real Madrid than City currently. I'd also expect (unfortunately) players to pick either of those teams over Utd, as they so often probably do.

Well, Barca/Real are a step ahead of both, tbh. And Citeh might not be about to dominate Europe (but they'll challenge as well as most, imo), but they're set to be challenging for the Premier League, year-on-year (with Arsenal, and Manyoo if the investment's there).

Precisely, and *if* the investment is there (which splashing 20-30m on players would suggest it is), things should stay very interesting between United and City and I believe that United would be the more appealing choice when it comes to footballing reasons.

It's interesting you mention Arsenal and not Chelsea! Surely Chelsea are poised to break out the big money and revamp that squad of theirs.

That's a touch optimistic. If they keep up the level of investment it will be tough for us to stay ahead. The only reason we stayed ahead of Chelsea is they stopped buying really.
