Almost Titanic 2

Looks like he was heading straight for Giglio Porto, with the intention of a last minute turn to starboard. He turned late, and of course there is a lot of sideslip when turning a ship of this size. This explains the hole port aft. He nearly go away with it. If he had put the wheel over 30 seconds earlier he would have missed the reef.

Also looking at that it seems the Captain waited and awful long time before doing anything significant.

Hits rocks at 20:30, turn towards island at 21:00.

30 minutes is a long time, however it could be that the ship was without power for tht time thought there isn't any reports it lasted for that long.

If a shp i was incharge of, hit something first thing i'd do no matter what was get to a port or as close to land as possible.

I wonder how much of this will backlash on the Italian economy...? I'm sure they could have done without this right now!

Au contraire. The Costa Concordia's parent company, Costa Cruises are owned by an American umbrella company, Carnival as others have already pointed out, so the costs of this will ultimately fall on them.

However, right now, the Port of Giglio will be doing quite well out of this, with all those news crews staying in hotels, eating in restaurants using the shops etc. Unless of course, the fuel tanks rupture and the environment's ruined.

Good question. Refloating stranded ships - even cruise liners, has been done before - while in the upright position. But since she is resting on her side, I'm not sure how this can be achieved.

Pumping water to and from the ballast tanks to rebalance it. It's what they did with the Cougar Ace. This article about it is well worth reading - http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/magazine/16-03/ff_seacowboys?currentPage=all

Too bad the cars inside were a total write off.

I heard most of them were fine. They just scrapped them all presumably because they thought people wouldn't want cars that were on board.

Edit: Ah yeah it says on there.

You don't really need much depth, look at how much of the Concordia should be underwater, not that much relative to its total height.

and this...

Grosseto - One of the hypotheses being studied by investigators who are investigating the tragedy of the Costa Concordia is the master, Francesco Schettino, has approached the island of Giglio so much as a "tribute" to the head maitre d 'of the ship, Antonello Tievoli, Gigliesi. But the first not to believe, on the dock of the Giglio, it is the father Beppe.

"The boat runs every week and every week my son tells us - he explains - but he never asked to move so close, nor did it this time. All we need. The ship is always spent at least 400 meters away, this time it is went on the rocks. And why. "I do not think that the commander wanted to make a tribute to my son. Friday there was an error, something has gone wrong."

Tievoli's sister, Patricia, to 21.08 on Friday - the night of the accident - he wrote on Facebook: "soon will pass close by the Concordia Costa Cruises, a GREETING to my brother who finally will arrive in Savona, to enjoy a little 'vacation !!!".

Surely a refurb is out of the question ?

with half the ship under, the damage must non repairable by now.

If the do, i can only guess it will take years, and thts not including damage the side of the ship that is now on the seabed.

Well the Herald of Free Enterprise was re-floated and sent to India to be scrapped, obviously the whole of the interior would have to be ripped out but unless the superstructure has been significantly damaged I bet they could refit it.

On the subject of cruise ships, on small islands how do they make the ports deep enough so massive cruise ships can dock?

They dont need to, the ship will tender in to small ports.

The ship stops way out from the port, and then you board small boats to take you to port.

This was taken from the small tender boat, about halfway between the ship and port, so you can see how far out is stops:
