Amazon Fire TV

I get buffering when streaming from my Network drive and over the wifi for normal channels, wifi strength is full and I can stream on my iPhone perfectly on 2.5ghz I've not bothered with 5ghz

Any known tweaks to fix this?

Side loaded with Kodi ...

Thanks all

I had this but no idea why, I refreshed the box as I had only had it a week or so, and reinstalled everything, all worked fine after that.

Try 5ghz I vaguely remember switching between the 2 solved a similar issue for me.

Using Plexmbc on my fire tv with Amber skin - been using it for 2 weeks but last night it suddenly couldn't see media server...

Plex worked fine on the main screen (aswell as other apps)

Tried rebooting PC with plex server on it and Fire TV but nothing worked...

Tried it later and was working fine again....

Any ideas what caused this?

plug it in ?

Seriously though it was plug and play with the last box I would have just assumed it worked on the new one.

lol that's what I thought but reading around it doesn't seem to be the case with the 4k :(

I've tried xbox 360 wired controller and also a xbox one with cable neither even power up (both work fine on pc etc)

*edit* hmmm appears the usb port might be faulty, just bunged a usb stick in with a light on it and nothing :(

*edit2* I'm a complete spaz...... :) forgot I had usb debugging enabled........ turned that off (after factory reset) and it works fine, doh!

I'd love to however this flat I bought is ridiculous. In both the lounge and the master bedroom there are only 2 single plug sockets per room. Both in very difficult places compared to how our furniture is arranged. I've already got the lounge kit running on an 8 way and 3 plug splitter from the source which is pretty crazy. The bedroom is not much better, a 4 way with the TV, Sky box, phone charger and the FireStick power source however I need a longer cable as when it is plugged in to the plug source it's stretched as much as it can go just to get it to fit.

I guess in the 60s when this flat was built they only needed power for lighting hahaha
:eek::eek:

I fitted 16 plug sockets (8 doubles sockets) in my bedroom and i then have 1x6 way, 2x4way, 1x2way plus a few of them square plug in 3way adaptors plugged in to them...
Think i counted that i have 34 plugs plugged in at a time..:D (And that still not enough for everything and i have to keep swapping plugs :( )

I currently have a 2nd generation chromecast which I use plex to stream to and all works fine.

What can the fire TV stick do that the chromecast can't?

Fire stick pros:
Amazon prime.
Ui is on the screen rather than the device you are casting from.
Play games (there are a handful of chromecast games however....)

Chromcast:
Google play music

Erm. I can't think of anything else. I have both and use the chromecast almost exclusively.

just in process of buying one of these for the bedroom tv.

Couple of questions.

I have a HTPC in a cupboard under the stairs, cables from that (HDMI & Optical) run into the Main TV & Amp in the lounge where we use it to watch films / tv shows via XBMC/KODI

When we get one of these Amazon Fire Sticks for the bedroom. How do you install Kodi on it. So we can also use the HTPC downatairs?

Do I have to use cables at all from the HTPC as that would be difficult.

Also, on another nots. I use on my iOS devices. 'Fing' to turn my HTPC on, then a app called 'TouchMouse' by Logitech to control the Mouse on the TV Screen when on the HTPC and turn it off that way.

How on earth would I turn the HTPC of from upstairs then whilst using the AFStick?

Thank you

The Fire Stick is a stand alone device onto which you install apps. No need for a phone or other device.

It also supports captive WiFi connection, such as in hotels, where you need to open a browser page to log into a connection.

And the Fire Stick supports installing Kodi.

I'm assuming from your description that your HTPC is both the storage for all your media files and the player for your living room? In terms of the Fire Stick, the HTPC is the source for media, the fact it's running Kodi is irrelevant.

You will need to set the folders with your media in as network shares available over WiFi. Then when you setup Kodi on the Fire Stick and connect it to your WiFi network you enter the network location of your shares on the HTPC and it will see the media. You use the remote to control the Fire Stick.

Ad for turning it on, I'd suggest looking at using wake on LAN to wake the HTPC whenever the Fire Stick requests access to a network share.

The other option you have is to move to a central network store, like a mini server or a NAS and then just have streaming devices connected to your TVs, rather than using the PC throgh the TV. This depends on what else you use the HTPC for.

Installing Kodi on a Fire TV or Stick is simple, there's loads of guides about. It's merely a case of sending the .apk file to the device and installing it. Then there's a bit of fiddling to get an icon on the home screen.

I dont use kodi either, dont need it. already have plex for my media serving/playing. The only other thing kodi offers is a doorway to less than legal content. not interested in that, i'd rather pay for streaming services and support the industry.
