Amazon Fire TV

Anyone having issues with their FireTV and audio sync? Media on Amazon and/or Netflix seems to have a lag on it recently. Tried rebooting etc, pausing etc. all the usual.

I have optical out of my Panasonic GT50 going into a DAC and then analogue into my stereo amp. Fixes it when I plug direct into the FireTV but I've never had to do that previously.

Any ideas?

Does the Fire TV still badly crush blacks and clip White's? The last time I ran calibration videos through it (via SPMC) the crush and clipping was horrendous, have they ever fixed that?

How often do Netflix app updates get pushed to the fire TV box?

Last update was October on mine and I think there is a newer version where you get small clips of every TV/movie as you scroll onto them, not the case yet for me.

SPMC is fine doesn't show any of the issues you mentioned

I tested last night on a mates 3 Fires all going to different brands of good quality TVs and all of them still show hideous crush problems with calibration film runs. Running the same film files through the same inputs with a different device and replay is perfect. There's nothing Koying can do to rectify it with SPMC, it's a borked output from the Fire TV and is down to Amazon to fix if they can.

Have you checked if the TV is setup to receive full or limited video range? I started watching House of Cards on Netflix and randomly having never had any problems with my FireTV's input slot set to 'auto' range it was crushing out everything. Set it manually and it was fine. I think using 'auto' for the video range on some TVs can screw up sometimes.

No it's not an RGB range issue. The problem isn't so bad on the Gen 1s you can get black at 17 to just show if you wack up black level/Brightness (depending on TV brand) but if you're passing it through an AV setup it knocks out calibration for everything else on that TV input.

The Gen 2s however there is just nothing at 17 regardless of what RGB range you set and Black Level/Brightness levels. The Fire just isn't displaying it. Others have noticed it and even tried to take it up with Amazon but have been blanked (Then again look at Amazons attitude to US owners of Fire Stick Gen 2s and the lack of video scaling options in setup)

At the moment all my Fire TV's use TVMC, although it looks like it's running off Kodi Version 14.

Has there been much in the way of improvements as i see they're now on a V17 beta. Everything is working nicely but i can't help feel i want to mess around with it!

Never had an issue with 16-235 on mine, it is a shame you can't set it up as full range though as the rest of my devices are. Still no 24p which is the bigger issue stopping me from using it as my only source.

Gen 1 or Gen 2?

SPMC 16.5.x can give 24p and DTS and AC3 passthrough without a problem.

No idea on the Gen, it's from early last year. I thought 24p was an Android issue, not media player dependant? Will have a look.

When SPMC says '4k' support what exactly do they mean? HEVC Main 10 / 10bit / 60 anything else?

If it has optical out and no micro sd card slot it's a gen 1 otherwise it's a gen 2. 24p isn't an android issue as that was solved ages ago, it's a lazy arse Amazon dev issue.

Fire TV Gen 1 can not do 4K or H.265. Fire TV Gen 2 is limited by HDMI 1.4 so will only ever be 3840 × 2160 30Hz max. SPMC plays 3840 × 2160 24/25/30 fine with obvious limitations on bandwidth if media is supplied over a network (and high bit rate even from attached USB media). Gen 2s are fine with H.265 but will never do HDR because of, again, the limitation of only having HDMI 1.4.

1st Gen Stick. Will check out SPMC tonight, very interested if it allows 24p. Thanks for the info, looks like it's worth hanging on for a Gen 3 Fire TV which will hopefully be HDMI 2.0a.

As I've switched my Gen 2 back on the last couple of days to play around with, it got the new software update yesterday (v5.2.4.0 build 565189620). Anybody else had it yet? Not sure how I feel about it, in some ways the interface is smoother and quicker to navigate but in others it feels far more clunky . At least they do give you the option to turn off the auto-starting trailers and if anybody is interested you can now turn CEC on or off as you desire.

Also contrary to the scare rumours they have left side-loaded apps alone and they still appear in recently used ;)
