Amazon Supermarkets

You have to scan your phone before walking in? Sounds inconvenient :p

We have cameras and guards already in stores, but the petty thief doesn't appear to be deterred much. I just can't see it being smooth running in the cities.

You have to scan the app on your phone as it activates your account so it can bill you and let you in. Yes it would be inconvenient to a would be thief that doesn’t have an account or anyone else that doesn’t have an account for that matter

It’s good, but I hate it when you’re selected for a random check and they start rifling through your nicely packed shopping

It should be a criminal offence. Makes me so mad when I get the quality check at ASDA which basically means checking your aren't thieving anything check.

I agree. Its not on that they have a right to trawl through your shopping without any reasonable suspicion of theft. Even the police can’t just search your belongings for no reason.

Higher prices will be to cover the loses as I doubt the system is 100% accurate.
But probably a lot less losses than people shoplifting, 'accidentally' scanning the wrong (cheaper) item, or not scanning at all at a self service. The shops have been open for about 4 years in the US so I guess they have decided it's at a position where they can scale it out to other countries.

It's in the terms and conditions you sign up to when registering for self scan: https://www.asda.com/about/instore/scan-and-go/terms-and-conditions
As a user of the Scan and Go service, we may ask you to help us confirm that the service is working effectively by allowing us to check your goods against the scanner or to re-scan your shopping. Please understand that this does not imply that we suspect you of any wrongdoing, it is simply to ensure that we provide the highest quality service. If there is a difference between your scan and any re-scan carried out by a member of staff, the re-scan will be decisive.

If my local ASDA is anything to go by, then I'm not surprised they check regularly. :D

I'm not a fan of it, I don't like Amazon having this much of a footprint in the UK, they're getting rid of jobs for profits, they've helped destroy the high streets and they bully our spineless government into letting them pay whatever taxes they like.

I bet it's Morrisons who supply the store(s) from their RDC and possibly make the Amazon branded fresh food. Similar to the deal they have with McColls and Rontec.

That's how profiteering has been done for donkeys years. Before Amazon were the supermarkets themselves... The more direct comparison is self checkouts.

They should have scales to check the contents like they do for self service tills, it can’t be that hard, they know the weight of all the products and I’m sure they will know the weight of the trolley. If they want to remove the trolley aspect you could be allowed to bag your shopping while you’re going round the shop so it’s easy to empty.

You really think a nationwide fit out of trolley weighing scales is cheaper than shrinkage? :D

Shrinkage? I must have missed something there, I was suggesting that as an alternative to someone going through your shopping one item at a time. A set of 4 scales per store wouldn’t break the bank.

Won't work as different bags weigh different amounts, not everyone uses the supermarket plastic bags.

It's the industry word for loss due to wastage or theft. Your idea sounds smart but is impractical and expensive.

the high street destroyed itself by being crap. Amazon no more destroyed the high street than OCUK destroyed the purple shirted place, or the high street components and electronics place.

Way before I shopped on Amazon it wasn't possible to buy basic stuff I needed in the hughstreet. Various screws and bolts, could only be bought in packs of way more than I would ever need. Monel rivets, no chance. Even various computer cables and other items.

Plus, parking when shopping on high streets has become a total pain in the arse. There’s very rarely a space on our high street, and even when there is, it costs a small fortune to park for a few hours

Weighing an entire trolley of mixed goods at once would need an enormous margin of error.

Plus the usual scam of weight checks still applies, scan a melon, replace with same weight of steak.

I get the impression ASDA has the worst clients of any supermarket.
makes iceland look posh :P

also had the worst staff management of customers during covid in my experience

Amazon launched 'Amazon Fresh' in Ealing yesterday with Amazon branded food and some of their gadgets, regular branded food, and Morrisons branded food. No tills, just a phone app, tons of surveillance cameras and you walk out like a shoplifter. Interesting concept but their prices are more expensive than the likes of the big four grocers. Will be interesting to see how it develops, they could easily afford to bring prices down and beat the big supermarkets. For now though, I'll stick to Tesco.

"Phone app"

Well thats me out then lol. Can't see it replacing regular supermarkets anyday soon not everyone has one especially the older folks.
