Amazon Supermarkets

That's how profiteering has been done for donkeys years. Before Amazon were the supermarkets themselves... The more direct comparison is self checkouts.
Yes the supermarkets basically killed off almost all my local small corner shops.
This was mainly after the supermarkets started sell there stuff in all the petrol station shops.

There was a massive uproar when Tesco started selling clothes (especially Levis) and other non food items as well.

There's always a bigger fish! Supermarkets kill of corner shops, Internet giant will eventually kill off supermarkets...

"Phone app"

Well thats me out then lol. Can't see it replacing regular supermarkets anyday soon not everyone has one especially the older folks.
If they generate a new QR code each time, then they'd need to think of a way round it. If it's the same code they could just tie it to a loyalty card.
Or have a terminal you can check in with.

Amazon to roll out across the U.K. and wipe the floor with the supermarkets local and metro stores???

Be interesting to see if they roll this format out to larger style stores

ASDA hatred certainly seems to be a regional thing. It's the pits in London but fairly decent in Birmingham. A bit below Sainsbury's but certainly above Iceland. Adjacent to Tesco but potentially above or below in terms of quality depending on what you are after.

Edit: my colleagues in Derby seem to dislike it to. But they're new money :o

I think there is a way to cheat the system. I remember watching a guy who makes money from streaming himself walking around with his camera and he went in to an Amazon shop in the US. I forget what he did but I think it involved someone else taking something out of a container and handing it to him. So he didnt get charged for it.

Apart from the novelty factor I don't think this will make a big impact. It's another example of a business dominant in one area assuming dominance in another.

Plus, parking when shopping on high streets has become a total pain in the arse. There’s very rarely a space on our high street, and even when there is, it costs a small fortune to park for a few hours

And don't forget the high Street is generally awash with undesirable types, pandemic or not. Online all the time!

Just left the shop.

Scan QR code from Amazon app at entry then just take what you want. Prices are similar to the usual supermarkets. A lot of Amazon branded food, as well as Morrison. They also do meal deals etc. Geared towards on-the-go snacks. I played around by taking items then putting them back a few times, and pretending I was putting it in my pocket then back again.

Walked out with a milky bar chocolate in my hand. Still waiting to see if they charged correctly, maybe it happens overnight.

Will I go back if I'm in the area and want a snack? Probably not, unless I wanted something specific Amazon branded.

Corner shops are still thriving round here but of course they are owned and operated by families who work them themselves morning to night 7 days a week. I assume if they started paying staff on NMW the profits would go down fast.

The security thing here is the issue, theifs, masked people, surely something will go wrong.

Supermarkets have long since accepted certain levels of theft as costing less than the staffing required to prevent it.

Self scan tills are a constant crime scene. But that's £10 an hour x however many staff saved by having self scan.

running a family shop must be nice, my local one you go in and wait a few minutes at the till whilst the guy watches youtube or whatever on his mobile phone.

they got shut down for like half a year for selling legal drugs lol.... spice heads were ruining the area

The cynic in me says this will be used to help train face recognition and other AI and we're all doomed to live in a dystopian, social credit society further down the line.

Whats to say someone knows it or they steal your Amazon login to use the app?

Think about it from the other side for a moment. How does one app know it’s you logging into it without face I’ll recognition?

Someone needs to test this theory.

When I log into my Amazon account, an authorization request is sent to my phone. It's not like theft by other means doesn't happen every day :p

I saw this on the news the other day and whilst it looks handy I was thinking what if you got the bill and there were items there that you didn't buy?

Dispute process would be difficult.

You'll have a notification of your purchase sent to your phone. Obviously mistakes can happen, and it's your responsibility to ensure they don't happen by checking it.

A lot of the time I'll go to whatever's local, purchasing the same product at the same price makes no difference to me whether it's Tesco or ASDA.

Most of the ones I frequent are legit. One local one has been run by same family since I was a kid. They are great when you just need some milk or bread etc. Only crazy people hop in a car and go to big four supermarket for that and end up spending £20 extra on impulse purchases.
