THe first pci-e 3 gpu's will be backwards compatible to, likely pci-e 1.1 iirc, you will NOT need a pci-e 3 mobo for the first gpu's that SUPPORT but don't require it.
I've heard this before... thats why my PCI-e 2.0 card wouldn't work on a PCI-e 1.1 motherboard, ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe. No POST.
i know that the 5xxx are fully backward capatible with the previous 1.0 and 1.0a slots as i've fired up a few other machines with 2.0 cards.
My HD5850 1GB works fine in a 975X from late 2006. The slots are PCI-E 1.1 AFAIK.
