If it's anywhere near 12900k pricing that would be way too high, the gaming performance might be there but then it would be lacking in other areas where the 12700k would be better too.

Its not going to be priced the same as a 12900K, that's £630, its the same price as the 5950X.

After the 6500XT fiasco I wouldn't be so confident to not consider they would price it there as "premium gaming"

I hope RGT is wrong. I'd love AMD to release the 5800X3D at say, $50 (a randomly chosen increase, somewhere between 5800X and 5900X current prices) more than the 5800X currently sells for. But I doubt it will be that cheap.

Back on topic, the industry insider guy who writes for Custom PC predicted at least six months ago, a single flagship SKU at a premium price.

AM5 boards are starting production sampling this month as AMD just finished the spec design. Zen4 is ahead of schedule and on track to be announced in May at Computex and launch in July

In that case I'll almost certainly wait at the very least to see how good Zen 4 is before I consider buying anything.

Been there quite a while now.
That cpu will probably be released in April, not Zen 4.
You can overclock it, they decreased speed in order to fit within tdp limit, but it will be based on b2 stepping so that will compensate decreased OC potentional.
Only a 200mhz drop from however AMD measure it as the 5800x product page says 4.7Ghz boost which we all know they boost higher.

AMD were quite confident of its performance so we shall see despite the clock speeds. Perhaps there is overclocking capacity if good cooling is available.

They confirmed you can overclock it, clock is reduced to fit withint TDP, but anyone who plans to buy 5800x3d will have good cooler for sure.
