AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

The new audio would give me an extra reason to upgrade.

Would the new audio be compatible with my current 5.1 system?

Absolutly.
its not a soundcard its present the sound to your soundsystem.

People at the event found the demo they did with the sound experience impressive.

Sorry what have they changed with regards to the 290xs audio?

Why does anyone care if its simply spitting out 1s and 0s over HDMI (I'm presuming its already bit-matched).

Unless its coming with some nice DAC and analogue outs of some kind?

EDIT: OK, after looking at the press release I can see its more of a programmable pipeline for audio in games correct? I wonder if this will allow them to start pushing up the samplerates/bitdepths of modern games and drag the music industry (kicking and screaming) past the redbook CD standard of 16-bit/44.1kHz. Way to go for AMD doing something different though!

Sounds too good to be true. Also wouldn't surprise me if he had been misquoted. Nonetheless, interesting times ahead.

I know mate. It would be awesum if it was but better than a titan by 40%? I would put money on that being nonsense. I said last night that if the top end card was a titan beater they would have been shouting to anyone who would listen but instead made a throwaway comment at the start that it was "their" fastest card. Its all well and good beating titan in BF4 but one game isnt enough for me. Sorry if that sounds like I'm hating, honestly I'm not,I'm just a wee bit underwhelmed by the whole thing. With all the crazy talk of how good they were going to be before everyone realised the firestrike benches were performance and not extreme and all the "lol nvidia" and "haha nvidia yoo suckz" I was considering selling my 780s while they were worth something near what I paid for them but I think they gonna last me until maxwell now. Still hoping they pull something out the bag and suprise me though as I dont care wether I buy red or green.

Sounds perfectly logical to me mate.

Also those are you thinking about the new cards, well this is what is happening:-

R270 is HD 7950 re-boxed and these shall be reference design in beginning and prices from £170 region, so same as our lowest price 7950's. So OcUK is already at the new price, the newly boxed R270's will arrive middle-end October.

R280X is the HD 7970 GHz re-boxed and these shall be reference design in beginning and prices shall be around £230 region, so same again as our lowest priced 7970's. This makes our current Asus 7970's a bargain as they are TOP and Platinum cards, the equivalent of these in R280 X shall be in the £250-£300 region and available in their R280 X packaging around end of October.

R290 X unfortunately I cannot release pricing or specification info yet, but price wise its similar to GTX 780 but slightly faster. :)

Some of the tech sites are saying that it's 'expected' that the 290 will compete with the 780 while the 290X competes with the Titan. That could be a hint without breaking the NDA, or could just be a guess.

It'd make sense though, since the 280X is going to be faster than a 7970 GE.

That info is under NDA, an NDA for info relating to the lifting of the NDA relating to the release of the card which is under NDA...or something.:p
