There are some videos on Youtube that are pretty impressive, even with just headphones on. Very realistic sound positioning, and many layers of sound.
Try here.

That's pretty cool.
No I mean you would need the tech to hear the benefits, 3d sound like in that video you've posted has been around a while.
The tech is what you'd be getting by buying a Hawaii card. The whole point of why the TrueSound is better than just 3D sound is that it can get positional sound information directly from the game, accurately place it in the soundscape, run many more voices, and can mixed down to any sound system, inlcuding your basic stereo headphones, all whilst taking the load off the CPU.
Yeah proper binaural in games would increase immersion a ton... possibly a little too much for horror games lol.
The environment simulations are pre-baked though which while give the feel of different environments don't reflect the exact physical nature of the specific environment you are in which is a step I'd really like to see as it increases immersion a ton more.
That's what Truesound is supposed to do - a much closer, and more powerful link between the visuals that you see and the sounds that you hear. It's effectively a powerful 3D sound DSP that is part of the same hardware system that is generating visuals for the game.
Check out some of the old Aureal A3D demos i.e.

Always pained me that died off.
That is so messed up...FoxEye said:One of the reasons I won't ever touch anything made by Creative.
That is so messed up...
On March 5, 1998 Creative Labs sued Aureal for patent infringement. Aureal countersued because they believed Creative was guilty of patent infringement.
After numerous lawsuits Aureal won a favorable ruling in December 1999, which vindicated Aureal from these patent infringement claims, but the legal costs were too high and Aureal filed for bankruptcy.
On September 21, 2000, Creative acquired Aureal's assets from its bankruptcy trustee for US$32 million. The purchase included patents, trademarks, other property, as well as a release to Creative from any infringement by Creative of Aureal's intellectual property including A3D.
The purchase effectively eliminated Creative's only competition in the gaming audio market. It also eliminated any requirements for Creative to pay past or future royalties as well as damages for products which incorporated Aureal's technology.
Think I'll boycott them from now on...!
While it wasn't good for consumers surely you can see why creative did it?
