AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

Its an aspect of Oculus I've been curious for awhile - for it to succeed it requires massive backing and a mechanism to push it into the mainstream i.e. bundle with a console and/or steambox yet theres a lot of people backing what appears on the face of it like a dead end tech due to the lack of feasible distribution and uptake.

Theres 2 fairly major projects that depend on it one Eve Valkyrie theres also another major IP coming from a big name studio that depends on it also (can't say more than that). Its confusing that that much effort would go into something that looks like it would only ever reach a niche audience.

(Not to mention JC joining as CTO - I can't really see people like him jumping onboard if they didn't think there was a future there - though he has always been a VR fan).

I am expecting the OR itself to flop but the tech to live on. The adult industry will most likely have a Chinese knockoff that will be priced as an impulse buy and "software experiences" created for it.

OMG I NEVER REALISED THAT POTENTIAL UNTIL NOW!! I'll be in the queue ;)

Nice!! :D

Please hold we are processing your call right now.
Music cuts in

its though for any such feature, 3D gaming for example havent taking off, ocolus still in the cloud.
290 with crossfire might be a huge deal for Lt.Matt as I fail to think he wont replace the current cards.

Um an odd comparison to be honest mate. Oculus Rift looks a great product and sure it will be popular, but the hardware won't push sales for high end GPU's. Oculus rift runs @ 640×800 per eye, hardly taxing to even current hardware.. 4K will require monster GPU's for high / max settings, hence why AMD / Nvidia are marketing 4K now, they want people to buy into the whole 'Need more power' thing. Currently even midrange cards cope with 1080P just fine, Nvidia and AMD will keep pushing towards 4K to drive sales.

The prototype occulus rift ran at 640x800 all the consumer versions will be at 1080P.

Still, 1080P won't drive ultra high end GPU sales bud, whereas 4K really will require a lot of grunt. Probably looking at few generations of GPU's before a single GPU will truly will able to play games at high / ultra settings maybe even more, as games will soon become more demanding anyway. 4K is what Nvidia and AMD need people to want, will drive GPU sales. Early 4K adopters will be buying 1, 2 or 3 high end GPU's to max setting at 4K. I plan on staying on 1440P for as long as possible..

A counter to the R290 I would guess, £400-450 pricing if the 290X comes in at £500 or above.

Its about the same difference to the 780 and that is to the Titan, BUT, its clocked much higher than the 780, so at stock in reviews it will look like its performing pretty much the same.

It looks a lot like what Nvidia did with the GTX 760, actually a less powerful GPU than the GTX 660TI, and yet clocked much higher so its as fast as a GTX 670 in reviews.
Many believe its more powerful, so they sell well.

I hate to think if this GPU is genuine what they will sell for. I know people say the Titan and GTX 780 are a rip off but a least anyone buying one knows the score already.

With this new GPU (if genuine) it is very much a case of a sheep in wolfs clothing and with the likely price they will sell at, unsuspecting people will get ripped off big time.

I'm glad i understand what it is that i'm spending a substantial amount of money on, i don't have to depend solely on performance slides to tell me which one is faster.

So many people going GTX 760 over the 670 despite some good deals on that 670, and 'it' is clearly the faster GPU (in reality)

What happens if NVidia do launch this new GPU does that mean the GTX 770 moves into the GTX 760s place and the GTX 760 is EOL.

At least that "new" GPU has the correct memory amount! 3GB.

But that means going to be placed at below £240? Since the cheapest 3GB+ gpu NV has is the Gigabyte 760 WF3x with 4GB. Next up 770 has £355

Now pre-loading the Beta for BF4. October the 1st and we will know for sure how much VRAM and grunt is required and no more of this VRAM debate (till the next one).

Is Matt buying someone BF4 or is he getting it bought for him??? Hmmmmm :D

Tone is buying me a copy if im right. I can't remember the specifics now tbh. I think its if the 2gb limit is exceeded at 1600p with highest settings & still provide playable fps, single or multi gpu. I'll be able to test that of course at 1440p, but not 1600p. If by any chance its not playable, once mantle arrives it will be. Sooner or later tone will be buying me a copy most likely. :D

Regardless of what happens here though its not definite. This is only one map, but it should give us a good indication either way.

Can't wait to try out the beta no matter how much vram is used. I know ill be sitting pretty regardless of vram or grunt.
