AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

400plus and around 800 is very different for me

To me, if your an 'enthusiast' spending lots of money on a GPU is not an issue if you can muster anything into that category. If you think it will cost 800 then.. well that's you.

On the other hand theres generally an INflexible partner that thinks things like household crap and fancy cushions is way more important :(

Didnt stop me from pre-ordering two however :D

£400 plus needs to be around GTX780 performance

£800 plus need to be significantly faster than titan.

Actual cost irrelevant, performance per £ ... is where it is.

Back to my earlier post

They will set the price on the actual performance on launch day, just beware the extreme launch day obligatory benchmarks which will be optimized in terms of resolution, AA etc to show the card in it's best light.

Personally, I think it will be too hot and core temp limited. Will need water cooling to perform to it's potential without throttling when OC'd

You can always opt out. Let someone who has the cash and the kahunas get their hands on it.

They will be able to get their hands on it if I decide not to go ahead.

Seemed silly not to pre-order one on a credit card really as it will literally cost me nothing. This might be an AMD trust exercise and they let those that pre order have it for £400 with Battlefield 4. You never know! *wakes up from dreamland* :p

Well if I had the cash, or being realistic could I persuade myself to part with such a large sum for one component, I think beyond £450 is too much to accept and I would hope that in a couple of months this may be achievable especially if the two brands get locked in a price war.

While I am tempted to get a couple of these I'll hold off a bit until we get 3rd party coolers and hopefully some price drops once stock become more plentiful.
Just bought an extra couple of 7950s to go TriFire with, so that should do me for the time being.

They are busy working on the drivers for the release benchmarks, price will relate to performance vs. 780 and titan on launch day.

Here's hoping Nvidia are working hard and pull some decent gains ... that should result in a cheaper 290x with potential to reduce to Nvidia pricing as well.

GPU's are overpriced vs other components...

£250 for a decent I7 on s2011, s1155 or s1150 is a steal compared to GPU pricing.

And this is just a relatively recent phenomena. The last time new consoles were released, the undisputed king of single gpu cards was the 8800 GTX. They retailed at around £300 on release. The last time I purchased a desktop GPU, it was Jan 2012, and it was the Radeon HD7970, released at around £500.

Now, it seems that the price of a new single GPU high end card has got to be around £800 (or more). This is utter bullfaeces, but the trend will continue so long as it proves profitable for the big two. I know that inflation has to be factored in but this is just ridiculous.

Now, a new HD7970 card costs just around £250 (finally a fair price). The next AMD card up looks set to cost around three times this, yet the performance increases it will offer are going to be less than 30% across the board. Also, two HD7970's in crossfire will absolutely spank the AMD R9X (or wotever it is) performance wise.

Speaking as someone who already owns a HD7970, I can't think of any good reason why I would want to buy the new AMD card (or a TITAN for that matter). If I feel that I really need the extra oomph in the gfx department in the coming months, then I will get me another HD7970 and cf it for a literal fraction of the price...and get much superior performance to the new wallet burning GPU's in doing so (dual GPU headaches notwithstanding).

Jeez the 8800GTX seems like a bargain compared to new Flagships these days.
That was a brilliant card.

I'm currently still waiting on certain specs to get out before I decide on a card, worst case it disappoints in price and in what I need. I'll just grab a 7950/70 then.

They were a fair bit more than £300 on release as i recall. My BFG was £330 and that was 3 or 4 months after release.

That was best GPU ever made imho, in terms of how it performed and it's price compared to everything else available at the time. Prices these days go up for less performance.. Prices do seem to be dropping more before eol these days though, so every cloud..

Still could you imagine if a new Titan and R9 beating card launched at just under £400? People would think the world is ending.

I remember having a 7950GX2 and selling that for a 8800GTX was a great idea. I kept using the card until it died, RMA with BFG and they send me a brand new 8800Ultra as replacement.

Although you are no doubt correct, this is nonetheless a moot point.

£330, £300, whats the difference when we are now talking about £800+ emerging as the new 'standard' price of a high end card?

As an aside, the HD 7970's actually crawled up a bit in price a month or three after release I seem to remember.
