AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

I need a card that runs BF4 at Ultra 1440p with a decent average FPS. I wish we knew more about the R9 cards! The wait is horrible :/

EDIT: Which NVIDIA card is the R9 290 likely to compete with? The 780?

Interesting that the leaked slide shows the 290 clocked at 947 MHz rather than 1 GHz like the 290X.

Have AMD done this just to ensure the 290 stays below the magic "world's first" 5 TFLOPS threshold?

Often we see the less complex GPUs clocking higher than their bigger siblings.

Of course they did :)

I think the 290 is going to be like the HD 7950 when it comes to overclocking and could clock higher than it's bigger brother.

CF with a couple of 290s anyone.

That is what I have my eye on.

Hopefully on launch AMD will have frame pacing for Eyefinity as otherwise CF will be a no go for me initially.

TechPowerUp reports that Japanese retailers have leaked the specs for the high-end R9 290X and its little brother, the R9 290. As far as the 290X is concerned, you're looking at 2,816 stream processors, up to 1GHz engine clock, 5.6 TFLOPS compute performance, 4 GB GDDR5 / 512-bit memory config, 5.0 Gbps memory speed, 1 x 6-pin and 1 x 8-pin power connectors, PCI-E 3.0, AMD TrueAudio Technology, and DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.3 and Mantle support. The R9 290 boasts 2,560 stream processors, up to 947 MHz engine clock, 4.9 TFLOPS compute performance, 4 GB GDDR5 / 512-bit memory configuration, 1 x 6-pin and 1 x 8-pin power connectors, PCI-E 3.0, AMD's TrueAudio Technology, and DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.3, and Mantle support.

Does that means with a marginal overclock, the 290 would be comparable with a stock 290x?

Yes.

AMD want a repeat of 7950 / 7970 launch where the R290 regular offers a decent cost savings and when overclocked can match a stock R290X, of course the R290X can be overclocked too. ;)

Indeed! I guess what it comes down to is the price difference between the 290 and the 290x. I don't know who I'm kidding though, I've only been able to buy flagship cards for ages. It's like an expensive compulsion.
