AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

I can't see the point of the Titan if the leaks are true. Nvidia won't want its top two cards beaten by AMD's, which is priced below both of them.

If the R9 290x does beat both of them then the question would be, I can't see the point of the GTX 780. NVidia would be tempted to move a variation of the Titan into the GTX 780s place and that would leave room at the top for something new.

On Wednesday we could be saying RIP GTX 780

But I don't think it will come to that.

My prediction

When the R9 290X goes on the shelves it will be £50 less than the cheapest GTX 780.

I don't think so, I think it will be gouged out from anything to £550/£650, I hope I'm very wrong though.

The problem is what will NVidia do with their pricing if anything between now and October.

The same thing they done when the 7970 went faster and cheaper@£299 over the 680-absolutely nothing, another year of hoping PR-two attempts already since they probably found out about performance :o) and brand awareness will carry them through.

Roll on Wednesday. Looking to upgrade my one remaining 6950 (it's crossfire partner is kaput).

By all accounts these new cards will be something special, so I'm eager to see just how good they are, but equally eager not to get bent over on the price.

It's going to boil down to one of these, a 7990 or crossfire 7950s.

Be interesting to hear from Gibbo once they know about allocation. I am hoping there won't be shortages but I expect the first shipment will go very quickly.

Might be worth double checking that time. The you tube link says 20:00, and if the announcement is 15:00 US eastern time (EST) then that would translate as 20:00 currently in the UK. Might not have to wait so long after all!

Only problem for me is that I have a work function to attend on wed night, so can't watch it live.

Noticed some titans have hit MM, good luck to em getting them asking prices with the 290 on the horizon. That's the thing with buying GPU's at extortionate prices, the depreciation is gonna hurt bad when something comes along that is fast and substantially cheaper.

AMD Hawaii got Nvidia’s attention

Turning point?

The Hawaii event got Nvidia’s attention, we can definitely confirm that the event is something that Intel, Nvidia and many other companies have mentioned in our recent tour of Silicon Valley. The other thing that got Nvidia on its toes are the very successful Never Settle bundles that have created quite a lot of momentum in the market, even with mature products. A lot of people picked AMD over Nvidia just because of these attractive bundles and from a marketing point of view, AMD did a great job. It remains to be seen if the investment paid off, but it definitely helped AMD to sell many of its 7800 and 7900 cards. Our sources are telling us that Never Settle and Never Settle Reloaded really helped boost Radeon 7800 sales.

Our general feeling is that Nvidia now feels a bit intimidated by this launch, especially as all Nvidia talks these days is Tegra. Apparently this is what investors expect them to do, but the core business is suffering, at least as far as media buzz is concerned. Nvidia doesn’t mention Geforce nearly as much as it should and this is something that we were pointing out for quite some time to Nvidia.
