@ Kaap looks like your prediction of the 290X doing worse at high res/high details vs a titan might be wrong.

Let me put this titan killer rubbish to bed once and for all.

You’re holding a press event in the near future to discuss your next-generation Radeon series, but what can you tell me right now?

“They’re coming in Q4. I can’t reveal a price point but we’re looking at more traditional enthusiast GPU price points. We’re not targeting a $999 single GPU solution like our competition because we believe not a lot of people have that $999. We normally address what we call the ultra-enthusiast segment with a dual-GPU offering like the 7990. So this next-generation line is targeting more of the enthusiast market versus the ultra-enthusiast one.

“It’s also extremely efficient. [Nvidia's Kepler] GK110 is nearly 30% bigger from a die size point of view. We believe we have the best performance for the die size for the enthusiast GPU.

“Another thing I can tell you is about the process node: this GPU is in 28nm. Some have speculated that it was 20nm and it’s not for a specific reason: At 28nm for an enthusiast GPU, we can achieve higher clock speeds and higher absolute performance.”

You're right that Roy is a wind up merchant, but it's worth pointing out that he only said the card would ridicule Titan in a specific game using Mantle, which it still could, again in regards to the review, Roy also hasn't made any claim about it being a titan killer.

Ridicule implies it though. Yes he said Mantle, but is the only time AMD have said anything near it blowing Titan out of the water or 'Titan Killer' if you're being pedantic about it, was my point.

Hold up there folks. You're both wrong.

The 290X is targeting the 780 and should compete with the titan. But it is not supposed to be or marketed as a titan killer.

However the quote you mention comes from AMD product manager David Nekechuck. He's saying that in mantle a 290X will be able to ridicule a titan. Strong words indeed and we'll need to wait and see if its true. I highlighted the part in bold.

AMD Roy had nothing to do with this claim as previously suggested. Though he did jokingly tweet to EVGA Jacob that a single 290X would match 4xtitans in BF4. Of course this was a joke and he was responding to a tweet EVGA made.

AMD product manager David Nekechuck has claimed that the company's new flagship GPU will “ridicule” the GeForce GTX Titan.

He stated that, performance wise, the R9 290X will more than compete with rivals Nvidia.

The product manager insisted that the high-end GPU “will definitely compete with the GTX 780 and Titan” even though the R9 290X's 438 square mm die is significantly smaller than the Titan’s 550 sq. mm GK110 offering.

Qualifying his statement in gaming terms, Nekechuck claimed it meant that “with Battlefield 4 running with Mantle (AMD’s new graphics API), the card will be able to ridicule the Titan in terms of performance” and that it will be able to run the game “much faster” than Nvidia's best single GPU offering when using AMD's Mantle API, set to launch in December.

They'll have to lift NDA soon or the cards will be released before the NDA is lifted.
Although it would be quite funny if every owner had to sign an NDA agreement :)

I think the big question is when will swe clockers put up their review as they'll be the only ones to do proper tests that count.

*grabs popcorn and waits for LtMatt... :D*

*puts popcorn down as doesn't really like it :(*

Seems like its not just sweclockers brah. :D ;)

I'm going to have a guess and say the 25th will be the day.

I called it.

It seems we finally have a confirmation of Radeon R9 290 series launch dates.

According to the post from Cardpu Radeon R9 290X will arrive tomorrow on October 24th and Radeon R9 290 will be released a week later. This information is straight from AMD employee Chris Li.

Of course I told you both dates almost a week ago, so there shouldn’t be any surprises.

Additionally here’s my source, also confirming the launch date:
