AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

I need to do some reading on what this quiet mode is. Have AMD done their Montreal thing yet?

These results are from the Montreal thing :)

Just guessing here but I assume quiet mode limits the boost clocks and fan speed, and performance mode uses full power and a higher fan profile. Probably something similar to powertune.

like 2d and 3d clocks then?

Quiet = Simmering
Performance = Boiling

:D:p:D
Stop it kaap :D

I can't find anything. Anyone got any links? Maybe it is a dual BIOS, which can be switched over but nothing shown on the card to indicate this but again, they are early samples, so could have been missing.

R290X will arrive with marginally positive benchmarks but little headroom. The more benchmarks I see the more I think....

R290X £399
R290 £320
R280X £250

AD

I will take a punt that AMD will go with the same pricing as 7970 and 7950 on release. Well it's more wishful thinking to be honest. :)

R9 290X £420-£430
R9 290 £350-£360
R9 280X is already £250 up to ~£300

so for some these 4k benches that people say are pointless... Are not really pointless at all

4K is the same as using 4 x 1080p monitors which is more than 99.9% of people use.

So it is a bit pointless, benches at 4k.

The other thing that makes it pointless is if you run a game like Crysis 3 maxed out @4k it will run on 4 x 6gb HD 7970s but will run out of vram on 4 x R9 290s.

I will stick with my original price for the the top card:

R9 290X @ £500 - £550
R9 290 @ £430 - £480
R9 280X @ current prices.

faster than nvidia 780.
best price/performance ratio cards taking over the 7970 who beats the 680 and 770..
king of the hill coming.
the green ship is sinking.

The focus on 4K is annoying, most gamers are on 1080P. AMD and Nvidia are pushing 4K purely because they want people to feel like they need more power. They know current cards are more than enough for 1080P and are worried they won't sell as many cards.. Fact is midrange cards are running 1080P just fine.. Don't buy into the hype lol. You don't need a card for 4K if ya don't have a 4K screen yo.

I don't see the hype either, I mean I mainly play FPS games and I'd imagine 4k is horrible for those considering top FPS players tend to use lower resolutions as it benefits you. Also going back to 60hz and most likely 30fps in intensive games at that res. I'll care about 4k cards 2 years down the line when the screens become affordable and you can run it at high frames.

Very few here are going to have a 4k 60+ fps setup.

Kaap I'm looking at you!

Exactly, I find it irritating that there trying to push 4K as if it's already here and affordable. AMD / Nvidia aren't stupid they know they have 1080P overkilled, their like damn, "How are we going to keep selling these GPU's?" "The cards we put out last year and the year before are running 1080p fine...?" "I know 4K !!"

I seriously want a 4K monitor or TV (better both :D) but while they are on teething problems and still whack prices, it isn't really available for average Joe. The problem still lies with needing grunt. Kaap is ok with 4 Titans and Whyscotty/Frosty/AndyBird with 3 but realistically, the prices of the screens and throw in a couple of 780's/290X's as a minimum for not even full details, you are talking quite a big layout.

My guess is 2 years and we will have a chance of mainstream 4K but even then, I feel I am being a little optimistic and needing the next gen after the next gen to possibly be able to power it on a single GPU with decent settings.

This gives a little more perspective on it and when ultra details are set, the 290X still maintains its lead, even if it is by a tiny 0.4 fps (a lead is a lead). I do have a feeling though that the lead we are seeing is because of the higer memory bandwidth and when we drop the resolution to 1600P or under, we will see a swing towards the GTX 780. One thing is good though, AMD are touting this card as a 4K card and for sure we can see how well it holds up.

lol was this at the event today?
it only just beats it
weird benchmarks to do

I don't think the Tech is up to it for 4k yet

We would need some decent 60hz 4k monitors and even then 4 Titans or 4 R9 290Xs would only just be up to the job. AMD and NVidia both talk about 4K but really they are full of it, the other thing that is needed for 4K now is proper 4 way SLI/CF support in the drivers.

For graphics heavy games a rough guide to what fps you would get @4k is to use just over half what you get at 1600p. Even for 4 top end cards that does not mean great fps in games like Crysis 3, BF4 or TR.

Well, Gibbo implied that everyone would be "smiling" when the 290 hit the shelf...but if it is prices like that, I know I (and many others) certianly won't be smiling at all. It would be like "turn around and go home people, nothing to see here" :p
