Well, Gibbo implied that everyone would be "smiling" when the 290 hit the shelf...but if it is prices like that, I know I (and many others) certianly won't be smiling at all. It would be like "turn around and go home people, nothing to see here" :p

Just my guess and I hope I am way over the top. I do remember Gibbo saying around the 780 price but did also say that prices can go up or down upto an hour before release, so anything is possible.

First post, been lurking for weeks as I peruse the posts in aid of picking out my new GFX card but thios thread has both made me laugh my arse off and annoyed me. Namely the nVidia fanboys strutting around and rubbing in the rumoured temps from a single benchmark that means sod-all in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks to them I'm now firmly in the AMD corner, I'm a sucker for a good underdog and also the Radeon cards are just better at what I require them for (£ per perf (I'm a skint bugger) and Lux renderer performance). But this thread was important as if I ever have the cash a 290 looks like the card for me, I'm not doing 4k gaming and would be nice to have a AMD beast to brag about :P.

Now to the point I wanted to make, it's about Kaapstad and his comment on them picking a 780 because of it's vram shortage in comparison. He's having a dig at AMD, but why wouldn't they pick a 780? It's the card in direct competition with them for the price-range they might sell at and the vram comparisons are much better than using a Titan (33% adv over a 50% disadv). So not only are they pointing out that you can get superior 4k performance, but you can get that for around the same price (yes i know the prices aren't released yet but there's no way in hell they'll price it in the Titan range).

Now, the fact that 4k comparisons are pointless right now means little, both companies are hitching their wagons to the 4k train and there's no point in them picking a Titan because if you have no budget, the Titan will be king if you're wanting 4k gaming (that 50% extra vram).

Perhaps the smug nVidia fanboys should hold their tongues until legitimate benchmarks and temp figures come out, lest they end-up having to consume tons of humble pie for rubbing it in for weeks on end. But of course they'll still have Batman smoke...

Welcome to the forum :)

Unattainable 4K or not the first benches look good for AMD.

I will take a punt that AMD will go with the same pricing as 7970 and 7950 on release. Well it's more wishful thinking to be honest. :)

R9 290X £420-£430
R9 290 £350-£360
R9 280X is already £250 up to ~£300

The 280x is selling for £210 at ****, the vtx3d version with custom cooler

There’s not much more I can say at this point, except that I have several cards tested at 3840x2160, and R9 290X doesn’t just do well against the GeForce GTX 780…

Maybe this

" It kicks its ass, also beats the Titan and you still have enough £££ left to buy the new GPU watercooling block compared to the titans price" lol

This is making me more confident that the 290x could be had at less than or around the 780 bracket. Hopefully AMD will try to undercut the 780 with the 290x, due to it being comparable in performance.

I hope we get some more official benches soon.

Sorry not had chance to catch up on what news/benchmark of the new 290x.

How does it compare to two 7950s @1080p?

Worthy upgraded or wait out for next year's line up. Looking like a new cpu upgrade also next year.

Most last gen cards aren't worth upgrading, save your money for 20nm or spend elsewhere.

According to this thread, they are RUBBISH!!

Why run games at high resolution and high details, when they should be benchmarked at 640X480 with Ultra Low textures??

yea, Doom/Quake/Unreal anyone , proper games :)

One thing that does concern me though is this goat fetish I've seen, just what kind of forum I've I signed too.

Seems like the weird side of youtube you find your self on sometimes

I haven't really been keeping up to date with this card...so am I right enough in saying title dependant it trades blows with the 780 & titan?

Also intrigued by this 'quiet mode' if it does what I think it does (reduces/kills boost for quieter and cooler running) then amd know this is going to be a stupidly hot card, that or they haven't done any work on making a reference cooler that can handle the heat load, as it looks like they've just stuck a different shroud on the 7970 cooler.

If they are as hot as claimed, I don't hold out much hope for good oc results, blocks may be required to perform even minor over voltage.
