AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

I haven't really been keeping up to date with this card...so am I right enough in saying title dependant it trades blows with the 780 & titan?

Also intrigued by this 'quiet mode' if it does what I think it does (reduces/kills boost for quieter and cooler running) then amd know this is going to be a stupidly hot card, that or they haven't done any work on making a reference cooler that can handle the heat load, as it looks like they've just stuck a different shroud on the 7970 cooler.

If they are as hot as claimed, I don't hold out much hope for good oc results, blocks may be required to perform even minor over voltage.
I still think the pricing is still the key. If they are reasonable enough, those minor shortcomings ain't gonna be too big a deal in comparison.

Agreed though its going to need to be sub £500 to be worth it, but going by 280x pricing they certainly have the margin to do so. 290 @ 770 oc pricing (this would sting nvidia quite badly) with a 290x @~£440 would make it a no brainer.

At first I'm like wow ! faster than Titan.... the I look down and see a HD7970 which is non-oc'ed and so darn close in performance and I think ehmm... not so wow !

Yea. Personally I am hoping that the 290x won't be more expensive than the cheapest GTX780, and the 290 won't be higher than £380. If the prices are higher than that, then AMD ain't gonna be getting no money from me.

I am starting to think the quiet mode is exactly that, a low fan profile with higher temps a bit like the stock Titans run.

The other setting I suspect is just a raised fan profile for lower temps.

Sigh wish they would release something worthwhile. No-one cares about 4k given no-on uses it due to the expensive and lack of availability and support

I suppose you could make the argument that 30fps is just about playable whereas 23 is borderline unplayable.

Be really interesting to see the R290 290x crossfire benchmarks in comparison to a Titan SLI.

It would also help if there were cheap 4k monitors that can cope with more than 30fps.:)

I want to see them bundle a 4k monitor instead of the games

In the US you can get a 50inch 4K TV for <$1000 (Seiko Digital SE50UY04). When it comes to the UK I'm going to think about getting it if its priced at ~£700 :)

4K gaming is coming and as soon as manufacturers hit the right price point, 1080p will be a thing of the past, like SSDs and HDD

That graph would look a bit different with the Titan @1000mhz.
Yea...but if the 290X can has its memory clocked overclocked from 1250MHz to 1500MHz, I don't think the performance gap would change much. Not to forget, the 290X would most likely still have some left in the tank for the core clock as well, even if it is only 100-150MHz extra.

I want to see them bundle a 4k monitor instead of the games
lol...good one.

Haha i thought the same. The 7970 is a card that handles high res well though. If you had a 680/770 in there the difference would be a bit more impressive.

gm :)
hm the morning debate, bottom right what does fixed boost mean, does that mean no boost?
i guess that makes the bench make more sense but we know how much a 7970 & 780 can overclock, no one runs them at stock

so its just going to come down to how much room the 290x has to overclock where it should really be on that chart

i can see nvidia releasing a overclocked(overpriced) 780 to turn it upside down

Yes but they're comparing stock against stock.

A reference Titan is 876 on Boost.

You argument might make more sense in 6 weeks once the non-reference AMD R9 290x's are released 'pre-overclocked' so to speak.

I am looking at it in the same way as a lot of non ref GTX 780s also beat a stock Titan until overclocking is brought into the equation.
