AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

I suspect it just increases the fan profile overwise they would have only been too pleased to have used it at the Montreal event.

Maybe. But why use Bioshock DDOF which favours Nvidia cards and disable TressFX? I feel like they're holding back for some reason. Could well be wrong on this but its like they want to spring a surprise and outdo titan performance. Time will tell. They're playing their cards so close to their chest atm.

Now looking at those images and claims of identical systems except for GPU's...BS

You can't get a stock cooler for a 3960X CPU.

Come to mention it no you can't. Intel have recommend a closed loop W/C system from the beginning.

They're making it very difficult not to **** stir TBH :D. Why would you go to the effort of fitting a reference cooler to a 3960X and not the other machine.

If it can get the better of a Titan, they should have used one for the Montreal event. This would have stopped anyone dead in their tracks who was considering buying a GTX 780.

High temps aren't ideal but it won't damage the card is the point i think. If you want cooler temps, just raise that fan. Knowing how a reference card sounds above 60% i think id prefer quiet mode and 90c temps. :D

yeh basically they saying its okay our cooler is a cheap nasty thing we've not updated in 5years...its safe! that plastic burning smell is normal

Yep, totally agree. They obviously decided to stick with their target competition though and compare it to the 780. I for one though, would like to see the 290X perform even if only on par with the Titan. If it could, IMO that's a much better marketing strategy.

So is it possible to fit a stock cooler on a 12 core chip or or won't it fit?

I would say it wouldn't fit but looking at the coolers on here, I can't see anything that resembles the cooler they are using. I am scratching my head, as it is an X79 board but just not sure on the cooler. The ram is also completely different but I wouldn't expect that to make much of a difference in games.

I don't think it is an intel stock cooler. I do however think its a very similar type of cooler. Regardless i don't think cooler temps will have made a difference in short benchmark gaming runs.

95c target temp.

So basically you either need a blower cooler or it will cook your case. And regardless, it will cook your powerbill.

I would be assuming there is very little, if any OC headroom with that. I would also assume the chips are hard to manufacture, so availability will be limited (titan style at launch).

Crossfire setups will demand an expensive cooling system.

I don't find these news particularly impressive. Remove throttling from a 780, overvolt it like hell, run it at 95c.. and you'll probably get the same. Only difference is, it is not done at the factory.

Well at least the AMD has that memory bus.

IIRC you can use a 1366 cooler on the RIVE

I think you can also buy a stock cooler for a 3960X separately but they are not good so no one bothers.

Possibly but still makes me wonder why they called identical systems and they didn't use identical systems. That casts suspicion straight away with different ram and a different cooler. And they were not allowed to run GPU-Z, so again, more suspicion.

I wonder if they had looked under the table, they may have found the answer :D

BF4 on console demo anyone? :D

They are testing some BETA drivers with 12K (3 x 4K) eyefinity support which they will be releasing soon

Quick, we need another in-depth discussion of what 12k 'really' means. :D

It looks similar to a Lynnfield cooler which is way, way not good enough. You'd be looking at temps at stock turbo (3.9Ghz) of well up and into the 80s/90s I reckon.

Seriously dirty.
