AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

Whilst I agree a standard needs to be set, it doesn't matter to the average user right now nor will it matter next year.
People here are discussing the card on its merits based on their needs, not for pushing innovation. That should be done by amd in the background to devs. Not the public, we don't want a £3000 monitor that does 30hz at 4k.

You really did go off on a pointless rant.

edit: The only place the higher res applies is eyefinity for the moment, this section of the market is a minority.

less of a minority than a few years back.
you could argue that 1920x1080 is a 7970/280x/680/770 gaming ground.
that 2560x1440 is a 290/780 etc..and that eyefinity would be 290x/Titan.
truth is that you need multi gpu once you start going above 1920x1080.
I could also argue that running diablo 3 on my 5040x1050 on a single 7970 is good even great with max settings and multi gpu isnt needed.
so while some think eyefinity is a minority so is 2560x1440 and such resolutions also.

we then stand with 1920x1080 that the majority uses and any testing of fps and gaming is to be made there as nothing else counts. your 2 year old card works fine there.

No need for newer cards.;)
such is the logic of internet.

But that is ONLY good for the very small percentage of people that will be able to afford 3 or 4 of them and the monitor to go with it.

If you think one or even two 290x will be capable of playing next gen games ( i.e. games ported from the new consoles, new engines e.t.c) in 4k then your are going to be in for a shock.

For example, if they had tried Crysis 3 at ultra details at 4k they probably would have got about 10fps :p

I wasn't saying that it made sense in terms of that but just that it's a marketing tactic that will be used by pretty much everyone in the coming couple of years.

I'd love a 4k monitor to replace my 1440p one. I could live with running games at low settings for the massive increase in desktop resolution and productivity.

That will put Kaap's mind at rest. :D

I like to use facts in my arguments :)

Also, no I did not say there was no need for new cards. That is totally illogical, even more so because I have pre ordered the 290x.

Well, 30% 1920x1080, 22% 3840x1080 I dont call that a minority. :)
if the majority runs 1920, then there is no need to sell new cards.
many still use older cars.
the change in gaming and many are using multi setups, 2560 and eyefinity more than ever and that is what newer cards adress a lot more.
one reason 4K and eyefinity is the targets of the upcoming generations from both camps.

so, preordered the 290x, nope not even the slightly envy here, not one drop at all, nope nada nothing at all.:p

I find their stats page fascinating. It's not until your browse that do you realise that all of us discussing the pros and cons of flagship cards and contemplating their purchase, are a minority. It never really crosses my mind, it's just the norm to me. We certainly get taxed for the privilege of being in this exclusive club.

Anyhow, on topic, I hope either the aftermarket coolers bring those temperatures in line or that the temperatures have been grossly exaggerated, otherwise there won't be much overclocking going on.

Expand the table mate :)

You see to be insinuating that I am saying there is no point to the new cards, if so you have completely misunderstood all of my posts.

Hmm the hotel room at montreal is the only showing the 290x has had isn't it?

that link above says a 4770k @4.6 and yet on the 780 system it was a piddly little heat sink and fan.

Some thing really doesn't add up.

I think us 120Hz users would disagree with that. Ever since I brought this stupid monitor I being trying to keep up with the latest and greatest.

Just got a 780 and I think I'll be buying another just to get BF4 to run @ 120FPS constant.
