AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

I've just purchased one to compare directly against the Titan so will post some findings up myself. Looking forward to playing with one :)

I knew you'd fold. I'm surprised that after all the hype I didn't even get the slightest temptation to get one. I guess I know the rewards are to be had a few weeks away.

Linus's review is good, both cards fully overclocked. The 780 taking the lead, the Kepler architecture just allows for more overclocking, it's that point of diminishing returns. The 290X comes higher clocked at stock, so can't overclock as much as the 780, so although out of the box the 290X looks faster, when it comes to overclocking it isn't.

This is like a reveres of the 7970 / GTX 680 situation. Nvidia need to drop the price of the 780 to £400, then the 780 is the better buy.

If Nvidia can drop the 780 price to match 290X then I think folk will have a really interesting choice - AMD's brute force + spec advantage versus the cooler, quieter and arguably more refined approach of the 780.

As a 780 owner I'll be sticking with my card, despite it's performance loss compared to the 290X. The lower temps and quieter operation suit my build. But if I were in the market right now it would be hard to choose anything other than the 290X.

Agree, price is the only thing against the 780 atm. I see lightnings & Classifieds had a bit knocked off today but now seem even worse price wise thanks to AMD's great pricing.

NVidia don't have to do anything. They will know themselves how threatened they feel not based on the ramblings of a few angry forum posters :p.

nah, Nvidia is under fire big time, Mantle, 290 pricing with performance.
Its an asian company and runs under their culture so loosing face is pretty big thing to them so no wont expect a drop in price.

Are you sure they were overclocked? If thats the case it normally says in the description and has a link to the card overclocks used. I see no mention of that in this review/ Also Linus is all at 1080p with unplayable fps. Its actually probably the least useful review ive seen. It pains me to say that as i like linus reviews for overclocking. But recently all they do is 1080 at unplayable or near unplayable fps.

Have to wait for tools to OC to support the 290 series.
780 is good value with OC.

I am reading in some reviews that non-reference will come out early next year, what's up with that? Does it usually take that long for non-reference to be released?

I hope that's not true, if it is I (or we..) have to go 780 SLI or take a punt and hope the noise isn't unbearable on the ref 290x.

I can't help but the think the 290 will be a fantastic card on non reference cooling, as no doubt it will run cooler than the 290x. Thus leaving a good bit of overhead for overclocking.

Also, I wonder what the chance of getting aftermarket coolers released before the non ref cards is. I'd quite happily buy an MSI 290x from here and slap a good cooler on it if it saved waiting. It would probably be higher quality too.

Still world records broken apparently. :)

I was reading a review site, can't remember which one. Heaven 4 seems to slightly favour Nvidia cards, something to do with the tessellation.

I will post a Heaven bench don't worry. I'll have another go. At the very least ill run a light overclock just to complete it. I just get annoyed with it because i always seem to crash on the last part. Happened so many times last few times i tried. Gets annoying after a while.

If anything Heaven 4 is better for AMD cards, a HD 7970 is better than a GTX 680 and a HD 7990 is better than a GTX 690. The bench tests raw GPU grunt which the Tahiti cards have more of compared to GK104 cards.

Yes i was talking about 780/Titan/290/290X. That's what's been said. We'll see if its true when the benchmarks start coming in i guess. As for raw gpu grunt 4k dictates that the best i think and the 290X pulls clear of everything at that res.

try Haswell with stock cooler :)
But yea, waterblock makes most sense for those that want to OC a bit.

I haven't had a stock cooler for years luckily. It's a genuine shame for me because I cannot wait months for non ref and if they were nice and quiet from the off I would snap one up today. Dear god, moomoo is right you know, I do game with my active noise cancelling headset quite often.. Uh oh, what to do.
Then I saw Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 WindForce 3x is on offer today, but according to hexus the 290x is quieter!

I would say the Titan has the upper hand in this review @4k

I also think that any 4k review using a single card is a waste of time as you have to turn the settings down.
