AMD RDNA3 unveiling event

Hurts me to say this, but from a purely marketing point of view, they are undercutting on price but also offering less. If you were to list their unique features, nVidia would win.

Not disagreeing with you mate. I feel though they have room to drop some and fairly soon. Let's face it they only just released whereas nvidia has had the 4090 out a while and ballsed up the 4080 regular and gimped edition.

So as apparently they are cheaper to manufacture and smaller die lets see if they manoeuvre.

They will eventually. Just because the unique features are more numerous, doesn't mean they're useful in a number of cases. Not that long ago, a 6900xt was available on the forum for £650 with 2 games. In todays market, that was a no brainer. There is scope to reduce prices, probably more so with AMD, but we won't see that for the foreseeable.

Neither company is looking to help gamers, they are there for profit. AMD and nVidia have positioned about right in relation to each other, just not in relation to, y'know, money.

With AMD they have lots of room when the 6000 inventory disappears. We know they dont have anywhere near the stockpile of them that nvidia do. With no inventory to prop up the prices of the previous gen, it could get way more interesting..

A couple hundred cheaper? I just had a quick look on ocuk so no idea on other retailers but I imagine they are much the same.

Can't see price for any others on ocuk.

And yes because people do the usual of "amd good, nvidia bad" yet here we are, amd charging in same ballpark as the competing GPU and lets not forget that other than raster/cod, the 7900xtx is arguably worse in every other area in its current form.......
That’s a top end air cooled AIB vs bottom end AIB. I disagree with it being worse than a 4080. In RT sure but we have something that is performing around a 4080 and it’s only just been released. We have the usual performance increases from drivers to come for AMD.

I hope so. Though if the nVidia stockpile was everything it's made out to be, I'd expect more price cuts by now.

I'm interested to see where the 7800 ends up in relation to a 4070 - this could be where the savings in construction method may potentially be seen. Not talking about massive differences, but bang per buck could improve considerably.

One which is a preorder against one which is reduced too.

I had a quick google and can't see many, if any places listing prices for the cheaper models so feel free to tell me price of like for like. Either way this point most liekly still stands:

EDIT:

Also don't forget, 4080 is extremely efficient i.e. uses considerably less power and thus runs quieter and cooler (and that's before doing power limiter/undervolt, which as we all have seen, takes it to the next level) so could be argued, it doesn't need a big beefy cooler like the power hungry 7900xtx do....

EDIT:

Also, usually pre-orders are cheaper, prices usually go up once back in stock especially given how well the 7900xtx are supposedly selling.....

That’s because they are all sold out. The card has only just come out and the cards are flying off the shelf unlike the 4080.

The cooler is smaller on the 7900xtx than the 4080. Power issues are on the driver bug fix list currently.

Doesn't seem to be a supposedly about it. Can always check the RoH boards here for an unscientific guide. The stock levels moving that Gibbo mentions seems to back that up, though I don't have access to that information.

At the same time price reductions are already happening on a 4080 on an AIB board to get it below RRP of an FE to sell it. And it remains in stock.

Do you know how long that will be though? It could be fixed/improved in next driver update or it could be over the course of 1/2+ years like every previous gpu by amd.... If you buy intending to keep said gpu for 2+ years then of course that is acceptable but still there is no "guarantee" (I have stated I am fully expecting big boosts but again, this doesn't mean it is going to happen with 100% certainty and given this, I am a bit more wary now tbh)

Literally the only advantages of a 7900xtx based on current prices that I can see:

- more vram
- raster, specifically COD (but then we also have a couple of raster titles where the 4080 excels at e.g. valheim and probably a good chunk more, which just haven't been tested...)

Meanwhile 4080, whether you want these or not is another matter:

- RT
- arguably still better in the upscaling department
- frame generation
- recording/streaming
- cuda
- more power efficient thus less power thus runs quieter and cooler
- better vr performance
- reflex/anti lag uptake

Not to mention, 7900xtx has issues across the board from some games being very poor in performance, to games having different levels of performance because of potential overheating or/and power limitation (at least on the reference models) issues.

If spending 1+k and assuming only a difference of 100-150, I would be going for the one with the better package on the whole and more stable/solid product all round but other peoples desires/use case scenarios may vary.....

I know, hence why I am asking what is the price usually? £1100 for a cheaper AIB 7900xtx model? But then iirc, if buying the reference board ones, aren't you going to be hit with all the issues of power limitations or/and throttling due to overheating?

Is that "power issue" fix specifically for the idle/dual display monitor issue or/and during gaming too?

Other AMD advantages:

  • Software seems better.
  • Arguably just as good upscaling (can't be including "arguably points in a bullet list to increase numbers...)
  • Probably won't melt in your PC

Won't argue with the others, so that makes it 8-5. Except I don't care about:

  • Cuda
  • VR
  • Recording/Streaming

Makes it 5-5. Then price is a differentiating factor...

The momentum is with AMD. As of last month their gaming sales overtook Nvidia and unlike Nvidia it’s growing YoY where as Nvidia has gone off a cliff. I’m not sure why people feel threatened by this new card from AMD.

LMAO - No-one wants the 4080, and the 7900XTX are flying off the shelves...supposedly my ****!

PS Has anyone seen the 3080 owners thread?

I might go and have a look for it, although very much like Scott of the Antarctic - I may be some time...

Well we all thought rdna 2 did well too but then look at the steam survey:

Etb2SPO.png

Yet as per the poll here, people valued, power efficiency, vram and raster the most and rdna 2 was arguably better than ampere here....

But I've stated before, I am fulling expecting rdna 3 to take the lead over ada next year in steam survey.

As said, weird decision buying something that is arguably worse in most areas when in same pricing area, if paying more for a 7900xtx over a 4080, you have to be mad in the head but each to their own and all that

Not sure I would say software is better given the current issues now.......

In all seriousness though, I prefer radeon software as well but literally never in it on either side so don't really see it as being a deciding factor like the other things. Well that was me being generous on the upscaling front ;) If you have to pick one, it is pretty clear which is better in both uptake and overall quality across a "range" of games as backed up by TPU etc. reviews.

Hasn't that been confirmed to be down to people not plugging their cables in properly? :o Also, I don't think we have had a single report of that for the 4080?

I don't care either about most of the points (even stated in another thread, the only "nvidia" feature I care for/use the most is DLSS) but you said it yourself:

Hurts me to say this, but from a purely marketing point of view, they are undercutting on price but also offering less. If you were to list their unique features, nVidia would win.
