Does anyone have advice in lowering temps a bit? I have a Noctua DH-15 dual tower, my idle temps are low-mid 40s, cinebench and gaming peaks at low 80s. And it's winter, so I assume summer will be much worse.

I am running at -25 Curve Optimiser.

If you haven't already done so, I would replace the contact frame. I think it might bring the idle temps to a happier range. I say happier, because there isn't much wrong with 40.

I was just looking at some tests for the 9800X3D, and those temperatures are not way out.



It sounds very much like the power efficiency is very good but the cooling efficiency is not so good.

What I tend to do, though, is to limit frame-rates on a per-game basis, for games that I play for long periods of time.

I have settled at 5.6GHz with PBO. Windows 7 Pro vs. Windows 11 22H2 performance below. W7 is absolutely excellent as the performance wise for gaming. The only downside is version of .NET required for some games, e.g. COD and Unity 5 engine.

I had originally bought a Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX VV2 for my new CPU, but saw a ASUS TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI on black friday sale for 40 quid less yesterday so did a free return and swapped them.

If I recall the Aorus was slightly better reviewed than the Tuf Gaming board (and neither is as good as the x870 boards the OC site reccomends for the cpu) but I paid a bit extra for a 9800X3D instead of a 7800X3D in the name of 'futureproofing' (yes I know there is really no such thing, but I only upgrade about once every 6 years so if I can get a bit longer out of it I will be happy) and that 40 quid saving more than covers the difference between the chip prices.

So quite happy with that, I'm sure the fancier Boards do get the best out of the chip, but I suspect I'm unlikely to be running fancy overclocks

Your temps are absolutley fine and to be expected. Npothing out of the ordinary there
 
Gamers Nexus have been saying that Zen 5 temps aren't directly comparable due to temperature sensors moving locations. So seeing higher numbers doesn't necessarily mean it's hotter than a Zen 4 showing lower numbers. Fwiw.

Sounds like an Asus motherboard, lol.

But, anyway, I can see this happening more in future. The more complex the 3D structure of the chip, the more likely it is that they will find it difficult to get rid of the heat they generate.

Then, I remember when the first PC's came out. It was common for people to buy an upgrade CPU every year, because back then it would offer DOUBLE the performance. I can remember the mainstream media issuing warnings that the latest chips were a burn hazard. They ran at a staggeringly dangerous forty degrees C. That's without a fan, I might add.

Temps for me have been quite good on a 360mm AIO. Did a Cinebench R23 run and maxed out at 72c. OCCT AVX maxed out at 78c. -30CO. That’s 23c ambient.

Seems a little cooler or around my 7800X3D to me.

I had nothing but problems with my Aorus Elite so have swapped it for the Asus Tuf Gaming Plus. In my opinion you dodged a bullet. Gigabyte's BIOS has been broken since the safety update for X3D in October 2023. I am not the only one with problems on every BIOS since. Also according to Hardware Unboxed there was no benefit to performance going from B650 to X870 boards at 6000 CL30 EXPO, just other features
 
Has anyone manually reduced PPT, TDC, EDC to try and lower temps?
I tried that on 7800X3D and got random instability. Just set a lower temperature Target if you want less power and slightly less performance. 80c target in the BIOs will give you >95% the performance, it just won't boost so hard. Benchmark it in games and see where you feel happy. But Zen 4 and Zen 5 non X3D run at 95c happily 24/7 under heavy loads. In games they generally run cooler.
