*** AMD ThreadRipper ***

^^^ This, that said if I had the money I'd buy one, not sure quite what I'd do with it but hey that's never stopped me in the past.

You won't stop enthusiast buying new kit but they are savvy enough to know that buying just for gaming (even if that's what it ends up being used for) isn't it best use case

Well that's the thing there's plenty of people out there with money to burn who just want the next "best" thing or to have a play with new kit, there are a lot of gamers who are on Intels enthusiast platform when mainstream chips would serve them better. Extracting a file 30 seconds faster when you go downstairs for a drink doesn't make much difference.

For me and many others it's a hobby, if you want one buy one.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'll still be doing plenty of gaming on it, and it's performance in games is plenty at the res I play at and I don't want to compromise productivity perfirmance at the expense of a few extra fps.

I'm looking forward to rendering AND gaming at the same time.

Difficult one. Everyday apps like browsing, Word which don't need the performance? I'd prefer not to compromise on gaming myself, even though I'm not a heavy gamer.
Two PC's still rule :), one for gaming, one workstation.
Agree. good to have some competition and hope AMD do get the sales and profits to go with it.

I can sorta see your point with the 2 PC's for gaming and Workstation stuff... So lets say we go down the route of getting a 7700k for PC gaming and an Intel PC for a Workstation, buying from OCUK right now you'd prob aim for something similar to below for the builds right?

7700k top end gaming build
7700K £349.99
Asus Rog Maximus Hero Z270 £239.99
16GB 3200mhz 8Pack Teamgroup £188.99
Zotac 1080ti Amp Extreme Spectre £799.99
Superflower Leadex Platinum 750w £132.95
Samsung 960 Evo 250GB M2 £149.99
Phanteks Enthoo Pro M Window £81.95
EVGA CLC 280 £129.95
Asus Predator 28" G-Sync 4K Screen £749.99

Total cost roughly £2825.

Workstation PC
Going cheap here on the components as it doesnt need glitz or glamour, just needs to work.
Intel 7820X - £518.99
Asus TUF X299 (cheapest X299 on OCUK) £229.99
Avexir 32GB 3200mhz Ram Quad Channel £233.99 (cheapest Quad Channel 3200mhz ram on OCUK)
Asus GT 210 GPU - £23.99 (7820X has no IGPU)
EVGA 500W 80+ PSU £44.99 (Should be half decent as EVGA Right?)
Bitfenix Nova Midi case £26.99 (Cheap and half decent)
AOC 24" Monitor £109.99 (Cheapest 24" on OCUK)
Raijintek Adios CPU Cooler £18.95 (Cheapest CPU Cooler compatible with 2066 i could see on OCUK)
Samsung 960 Evo M.2 £149.99

Total cost roughly £1358

So in total those 2 rigs would set you back about £4200 once you add in keyboards and mice etc and probably some more storage on the Workstation.

Need to lump on a keyboard and mouse for these also, but i wont bother putting a price on them as they are really user specific.

Now say i set the budget at £4000, what can i get with a Threadripper setup?

Threadripper Machine
Samsung 960 Evo 250GB M2 £149.99
Zotac 1080ti Amp Extreme Spectre £799.99
Threadripper 1950X 16/32 CPU £998.99
32GB Teamgroup 8 Pack 3600mhz Ram £419.99
Asrock X399 Taichi £359.99
Acer Predator 4k 32" Monitor £899.99
Phanteks Enthoo Pro M Window £81.95
Superflower Leadex Platinum 850w £149.99
OCUK Asetek Extreme 240mm Cooler £75

So comes in at roughly £3950...

And i bet it can do the job of both the Intel machines above combined and still have room for more :)

.

Yeah it's been some major BS with intel TDP

I'm interested to see what exactly the 18 core intel chip hits seeing as it's downclocked to 2.6 base to meet TDP... even though it seems TDP is being exceeded anyway.

I'm expecting a crazy power draw when people try to OC it.

TDP is the amount of cooling necessary not the power draw although is often a correlation, the thing is Intel X299 has the TIM issue so its TDP (amount of cooling required) is not that high compared to power draw.

I believe AMD's TDP is usually major BS as iirc they base it on "average loads" rather than worst case scenario like Intel.

Well if anyone builds a threadripper machine primarily for gaming they are a bit of an idiot.
I'll be using my TR CPUs to test and report bugs internally, support customers using the product and play games. I may do some video rendering as well, but mostly it will be used for work, web browsing and gaming.

Buying a TR for just gaming is not the best use of resources. A Ryzen 7 or even Ryzen 5 processor would be a much more suitable choice.

Damn well I guess its back to the drawing board.

Is this only for gaming,or for gaming, streaming and processing the videos at the same time??

Looking at what is being released this year,a Coffee Lake 6C/12T CPU would be the way forward, but TBH unless you are playing something like FO4,your Core i7 3930K is still quite capable if it has been overclocked.

I think the point is that the nonsense blanket statements being made are not what some of us are here for. We are afterall, enthusiasts.

I'm buying TR because it excites me and I genuinely love PC technology to play around with. I have a YT and Twitch channel but it's very infrequent and so 90% of my usage is gaming. I don't care about FPS etc as long as it is reasonable. It's the thing that's fun, not necessarily how it performs for our given task. Otherwise why would anyone buy a high end sports car in the UK for example.

As much of an idiot as someone calling someone an idiot for buying one for gaming I guess.

Sorry, I didn't mean to call you an idiot, I thought you were being facetious. I didn't think you were actually building a threadripper machine mainly for gaming.

I certainly get buying threadripper just because you like hardware, that makes a lot more sense to me. Hell, I've got a Westfield just because I enjoy building things, I hardly drive the bloomin' thing!

It seems the people not buying these for games almost can't bare the fact that someone may be buying the same thing purely for entertainment purposes or just because it's a thing. Bit snobbish maybe. ;)

I think its more the case Ryzen 7 will produce the same framerates or a Coffee Lake CPU will be quicker than even a 7900X I suspect,so people are looking more at the performance aspects. As long as you know what you are getting,I don't think anyone would bemoan someone buying something to play around with, its just in case you were not aware of it,and then buy it and realise something cheaper might have run a particular game better.

It's also a high five between a red and green shirt for that not so subtle nod.

Good spot!!
