Meh, if dropping that kind of cash for a workstation the 1920 seems better value. The 1800/1700 have really disrupted the workstation/HEDT market, TR is pretty amazing really

e: I'm holding out to see what we get with regards to workstation Epyc and maybe even 2S DT. Then just to convince the boss...

Hmm had my eyes on the 8700k as i figured it would be a 7700k with more cores, but this is certainly interesting, the 1900X could be a good option instead, its basically a better version of the 1800X it seems while offering Quad Channel mem which should give some decent gains in itself.

Well, time to wait to see reviews on both before i decide which direction to go.

Quad channel offers almost nothing except in benches, just like Intel.

The 1900x is priced apparently at 550£. More expensive than intel's
X299 8 core alternative which is presumably faster

Edit: it is 519£ here in ouck.

Yup, so basically the same now.

It essentially comes down to if you want a better platform with longevity (1900X) or you want slightly better IPC and better overclocking (7820X).

That's obviously assuming that the buyer isn't a fan boy, then no argument presented on here about the advantage or disadvantage of either chip is going to persuade you.

CPU performance aside, it seems intel has the cost advantage here which very unlike them!
Cheaper motherboards, at least on OCUK. I haven't looked anywhere else and doesn't require b-die to get decent speeds.
This is AMD's 7740k, pointless imo.

The x399 boards are better though.

Oh I dunno, my uni have just ordered 8 for use in systems loaded with with compute cards. The PCIe lanes are going to be a big draw. You don't need lots of cores when all your processing will be done on compute cards.

Wouldn't the 7770k have made more sense since it offer anything over that other than clockspeed?
