AMD To Launch RV770 On June 18th

Radeon HD 4870 X2 R700 Beats GeForce GTX 280

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While we are away for Computex, CJ let us know that the Radeon HD 4870 X2 R700 prototype card is out and it beats the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 in 3DMark Vantage. The R700 card is basically made up of two RV770 GPUs with 2x256-bit memory interface to either GDDR3 or GDDR5 memories. We asked our sources about R700 in Computex and apparently AMD is going to let AIB partners to decide the specs themselves. Therefore, the partners will set their own clock speeds, PCB design, memory types, cooler solutions etc. and there will be Radeon HD 4850 X2 and 4870 X2 cards differentiate by the memory type. The R700 card apparently doing pretty well at this stage scoring about X5500 in 3DMark Vantage Extreme preset while the GeForce GTX 280 card is scoring X4800.

Well, if the 4870x2 will be as fast as the GTX 280 isnt that a little disappointing? as not every game supports crossfire, and as we see from games like crysis it can hardly be affected.

Setting their own clockspeeds does sound nice, but im wondering what the limit will be

i might be interested if it can match the GTX 280, but its probably not likely.

This reminds me of Russell Peters and his joke he made for he own people.
The people behind Crysis we thinking something like this:"We will make the best looking and demanding game on the PC...and just for fun...it won't support SLI or Crossfire."

well im still confused as ati said 4850 is faster then 3870x2 so how it can be only 9 % faster then 8800gt ? well maybe ati were making big bubble out of it but if price of 4850 close to gt that would be a winer hope they have loads of them

I swear to god, if it washed the dishes, ironed your shirts and gave you a hand-shandy, people would still say "oh that's dissappointing". FFS it's going to be around as fast as NV's top-end part!

Perfect_Chaos i have got to ask even though i might regret it when you answer but what wouldn't have been disappoing as far as your concerned then. It looks as though it will beat the best Nvidia has to offer in the foreseeable future and will definately be a lot cheaper and that is not good enough .

no they didn't! people mistakenly interpreted a chinese article that I still say to this day was meant to mean "usually our naming structure would mean all the 4 series cards would be faster than the 3870X2 but this is not the case this time as the 3 series are being incorporated into the mainstream market with 4 series products appearing on times higher and lower than some previous 3 series cards"

And eveyone got all wound up because it said 4 series and 3870X2 and something about superior, put 2 and 2 together and got 5 big macs.

Just found this on Fud, 4850 faster than the 8800 GT by about 9%.

Well to be honest Loadsa that kind of justifies my purchase of a cheap 8800gt now more than anything! ATi *** 3d Mark06 and that number doesnt surprise me but it will probably just match the 8800gt in terms of real game performance! Though reviews will confirm this ;P

How can it only be faster than the 8800GT by 9%? The 3870 was almost as fast as the 8800GT and the specs of the 4850 are FAAAAARR better than the 3870

er gurusan... I got the impression from all the reviews I read that the gt was about a third faster (33%) than then 3870 in general?

I'm not expecting miracles but ust a good price/performance ratio with the 4800 series personally. More interested by that than any of the 2xx series stuff from Nvidia.

Thats the thing and it is where Ati may well start to win this argument i don't care if GTX280 is the fastest thing since gods snot because you pay for it and it won't be that much more impressive to cover the extra cost over the Ati cards. Money isn't a problem for me but paying over the odds for something is and thats another reason why Nvidia can sod off i am getting off the merry go round of paying a lot for not a lot more in terms of performance. Bad drivers also palying a large part i am sick of seeing the Nvidia "TWIMTBP" emblem and then 30 minutes later a bsod.

Oh, wow, no. It was no way near 33% faster, maybe in some circumstances where the game didn't like the ATi card or something, but the average difference was/is the same as the rumored diference between 8800GT and 4850, 8-9%. Some games the 3870 is faster than an 8800GT even with AA.

I'm pretty much the same. I can afford an expensive graphics card, doesn't mean I will/want to buy one though. The max I would spend on a single graphics card is usually £250 unless it's really special, maybe £300 for a dual card set up due to some added benefits and so on. I wouldn't pay silly NV money for a graphics card based on principal. The extra performance you get is no way near worth the 100-120% extra in cost that you have to pay. If i wanted the extra peformance, I'd go crossfire or something. Considering that Crysis really is the only game that realistically "needs" a substantially faster card, it's not really an important issue to have the "fastest" card out to just run one game. All it means now is that we can enjoy our current games with a bit more luxury, higer res, more AA/AF higher frame rates. There's games out that look great that need a fraction of the power crysis does to run smoothly, and I can't really see many more games coming in the near future that will need as much power as crysis (excluding crysis warhead of course).

As thats the card its supposedly competing with, with the 4870 competing against that newer 8800 GTS with the new name, so i can't see how that can be faster than the 3870 X2, as im sure the GTS isn't.

I hope they aint just those cards competitors though, as if i had an 8 series, i wouldn't go to one, or a 29/38 i wouldn't, only if i had low memory would i go to one from those, like 256/384/320mb, as pretty pointless for everyone else, as performance increase between all these cards is not exactly amazing is it, few frames, be like going from a GT to a GTS, GTS to the renamed one, the 9800 GTX, a 2900 to a 3870, you just wouldn't bother as its pointless, only cards that would be worth an upgrade from all those cards would be the GT200's by all accounts.

Ive had a GT, if the 4850, and 4870 are not much faster than it, then i wouldn't get any of em, even if i dont have the GT now, as be more like sidegrading, be like getting shot of my GT, then buying another one again in a few months time lol, what an upgrade :D, so id be waiting for the next cards from AMD, as i aint going green anymore. :p

Well I'm pretty sure my 3850 at 900/2160 beats an 8800GT by a good margin....so I would expect another 160 shaders, with their own independent clock, and a higher core clock to perform much better.

According to my m8 who's in the component selling business 4850's should be ~£130 on release.

Probably stupid to ask this....but if the 4850 is released on the 23rd of June, does that mean online stores here would have them in stock pretty fast, or will it take like a few weeks for them to reach suppliers?

I just wondered as (like everyone) I'm waiting for these cards for a new build I'm hoping to get end of this month. Currently stuck on my A64 3200+/1GB Ram/Ati X800XL :(
