The problem really is the asrock matx board, it doesn't have a lot of overclocking features, so I thought going for the 4200 if overclocking fails I still would have a faster chip.

Plus I couldn't resist it, if she's going to kill me, might as well get my monies worth :)
Good point, the 4200+ has a higher multiplier so you need a lower HTT to get a good clock.

I never tell my GF the real price, I always say 50% so just tell your wife that it was 70 quid or lower.

And it helps a CPU is so small so she will not suspect it is more expensive, the problem comes when buying stuff that comes in large boxes :p

I am still on the fence if I should go from a [email protected] to a X2-3800+ :(

exactly the same as me - wife never needs to know!!

I am exactly the same issue as you. 3700@ 2.75ghz should i get and X2
??? HELP.

tough choices but i think that if i do get an x2 then i would have a good/top end skt 939 system that should last me 18/24 months.

Well, I was thinking the same way as yourself, is it worth the upgrade, but with gibbo saying these chips will be hard to get in the future, plus I can't afford to change my m/b Gpu and ram again, it left me with very little choice.

Another plus point is, the chip can still be sold on later, there's always someone wanting one.

Bob

The 3700 at 2.75 GHz is not going to be slow and the X2 3800 should overclock to 2.5-2.7 depending how lucky u are.
It would depend on...
1/ Do you run a lot of programs at the same time?
2/ How soon will games be coded to use 2 cores
3/Do you do video editing etc?
4/ How long before the socket 939 chips dissapear altogether?

I have a X2 4400 clocked to 2.7 GHz and have been very pleased with it.
I game mostly but am now able to have other programs running and tab between with no loss of performance. If the answer to 1 and 3 is yes then I would go for it.
Phil

There really is no excuse not to get at least a x2 3800 for 100 quid.

Even if you sell the single core for 50 or less it becomes to much of a perfromance boost not to upgrade.

Strike while the irons hot and get one if you are s939 cause you might not get another chance.

Yeah I just ordered an X2 3800 and hoping I can get each core as fast as my single core in sig. At those prices it's gotta be done eh? :)

I would have thought that 2.6ghz will be easily achievable if you have nice cooling.

Just looked at your sig...Nice stable dfi mobo and artic colling 64 should be a breeze mate. ;)

Both my old x2 3800's did 2.6ghz no problem on silent air, :)

Excellent! That's what I want to hear. :D

hey guys

really cant be bothered with conroe at the moment, as amazingly quick as it is, im gonna skip this generation, partly cause i cant afford it right now.

But an X2 4600+ at 176+ will do nicely for now compared to the 600 i was gonna spend upgrading to conroe.

So would i notice much difference going from an opty146 @ 2.8 to a 4600+ X2?

Only thing that puts me off is the lower cache as i understand 512kb to 1mb is quite a noticeable difference.

i really wanna go for the 4600+ infact i will guarenteed, just want someone who's gone from a similar cpu (opty 146) to a dual core and if they noticed a positive difference

I will order one tonight, I sold 1Gb Ballistix last week and I have a buyer for my SD 3700+ and an old 160Gb harddrive so it will be a 'free' upgrade

I will however walk with my fingers crossed until it arrives hoping it will be a decent clocker that reponds well to increased VCore and not hit a wall very quickly ;)

I will not have the money for a Conroe setup for a while and I was planning a X2 upgrade in the future anyway and it looks like this is the best time to do it.
If in a few months the stock is very low and they are hard to get the price will no doubt be a lot higher.

Just don't sell them all OcUK, I don't have my CC here at work...!!!!!!
