AMD Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) - *** NO COMPETITOR HINTING ***

Just because AMD didn't release 5GHz desktop CPUs doesn't mean the silicon they're putting in Epyc isn't capable of doing it.

Though this isn't a bash AdoredTV thread anyway.

That's nonsense, that's not how the design process works as according to this theory, they ended up 500Mhz off their predictions, which is so wild to be stupid. Don't do it to yourself.
It’s less than 10% between 4.7 and 5.1GHZ, even less for 5GHz.

Names are arbitrary, look at the core counts, clock rates and TDP. If you look at each chip and it’s core count, it corresponds to something either within 100MHz or 10-15W. It’s nothing given how he made this report in what? November last year?

It also overlooks the technical details such as chiplets that he leaked way before anyone else.

And the APUs are Q3, we’re barely into Q3.

Jim explained what is going on here, they simply moved SKUs and pricing around to increase profits, the 8 core R5 became a 6 core, the 12 core R7 became the 8 core, the 3800X became the 12 core R9 3900X.

If you look at it that way, it's a match.

Seems pretty clear to me that AMD realised Intel could no longer compete well enough to justify them releasing the same level of competition they did for Zen 1. They've put worse quality silicon into higher priced parts for Zen 2 because the performance lets them get away with it. Annoying for us but good for their profits.

Indeed, the only thing that hasn’t seen the light of day from his release is the 5/5.1GHz parts. If previous is anything to go by TR and Epyc will be getting these in the first instance.

So....wait...

He did a bunch of videos about AMD. So he feels AMD owes him money for it!? (a couple of grand he mentions). As, obviously they weren't going to pay some random dude for making random videos he then basically throws the toys out the pram and tries to blackmail AMD with saying, if they wont pay him then he will do leak videos.

Then spends the second half of the video trying to say what a good and generous guy he is.

Man I am so done with Jim. Used to love his stuff too.

ha ha ha guy is a tool

Right exactly, incredible how in 3 years they came from nothing to just seeing Intel as "not a credible threat to them"

I don't begrudge AMD this too much, these CPU's are still excellent and excellent value, stuff your coffers to the brim AMD you deserve it and we need you to remain strong, but don't go over the top, stay grounded.

Come on, it was totally made up. I do not understand why he has legions of defenders, AMD fanboy thing? do you not understand he does more harm to AMD than good, right?

Completely agree.

I think he just got carried away with the whole YT Celebrity aspect of it, once he saw the videos generating clicks.

Now I think he's just trying to emulate Charlie (who he quotes from time-to-time) and feels he too is a "professional analyst" (gulp!), and hence feels can charge for his work, irrespective of how accurate it may be. I don't think it's going to work out, and I'm sure that desire for celebrity will bring him back - for better or worse.

Whatever, it's not like anyone ever took his videos that seriously anyway, so no big deal.

Yup I agree. I think we'll see them next year when Epyc gets Zen 3 and isn't taking all the decent silicon from Ryzen.

While Zen had a bit of headroom for overclocking (i.e. good silicon clocked fairly high), Ryzen 3000 seems to be average silicon maxed out.

Yeah they're not ripping people off, the CPUs are excellent and not stupidly overpriced. It wasn't very long ago that you were looking at £1000 just to get more than 4 cores on the desktop thanks to no AMD competition.

I'd be happier if the 3700x were £280ish, the 3800x didn't exist, and the 3900x a bit lower to manage the gap but I can't blame AMD for adding extra parts to increase their profits.

When the boot has been on the other foot, either CPUs or GPUs, AMD have always priced them to make money, they’re not a charity!

This, its why we also need Intel, it's a bad idea to wish them away competitively.

I do think AMD have a more grounded attitude simply for being in the dumps for so long, i think, i hope AMD understand better than Intel why it's important to keep your customers on side, i don't mind AMD pushing it a bit, i've always said that, they need money for R&D to continue to offer strong products, i understand that.

Chip that just keeps selling out is the regular 3600, as it makes the 3700X look silly and overpriced for most folks; even OCUK can't get rid of 3700X's at £299! ;)

Really feel AMD should have pumped out a 3700 (8C/16T) at £260, and really upset things for Intel. Then left the "X" series for 3800/3900.

It's only a week sale though then it's back to £329 or whatever. But a sale this soon does kind of suggest that the 3600 is vastly more popular given it can usually match the 3700x in gaming and isn't massively behind in productivity but is a hell of a lot cheaper.

I wonder if there'll be an official price cut to £279-£289 or something once the 3950x is out.
