AMD Zen 5 rumours

Release is tomorrow for the 6&8 core parts so reviews today? Surely AMD doesn't have anything to gain from setting the review embargo to the same day as release?

There's been absolutely loads of releases that are like that, having review's a day before launch is actually a rather new thing.

I'm currently sat on a 5900X on AM4, so kind of curious how this turns out.

Hm... interesting.

These aren't bad prices, mostly, but they are also not great and the 9600X certainly isn't.

I would have expected each one to be $50 cheaper, i think what AMD are doing here is creating a clear distinction between the two AM5 CPU's and giving Intel some room to slot theirs in to when they launch at which point AMD will probably reduce the price of all of these by $50, they are baking that in ahead of time.
 
Zen4 to Zen5 looks much like Zen to Zen+
there the IPC stayed almost identical, but higher clocks gave 10% perf. And better efficiency
now clocks are almost same, IPC gives maybe 11-16% perf. And better efficiency

compared to current Zen4 prices, Zen5 looks too expensive
lets see if benchmarks show any surprises

You're not far off that analysis but its a bit different to that.

Zen: new architecture.
Zen+: refresh with improvements.
Zen 2: new architecture.
Zen 3: new architecture.
Zen 4: new architecture.
Zen 5: new architecture.

Zen 5 was created primarily with efficiency in mind, its actually AMD's breakthrough architecture for Laptop's, that's what the core was designed for, IMO, and it shows, its not a big leap in performance, its a big leap in efficiency.

I think that's fine, sometimes you have to take a step back and reduce the power consumption for the performance you're getting, not doing that is how you end up at 300 watts.

Its almost as if its designed to have the final word on the ARM argument, which it absolutely does, it more than nullifies the ARM argument, while its not always more efferent, its never less efferent than Qualcomm's offering, when it takes that Qualcomm chip 54 watts to beat Zen 5 at 33 watts by a small amount in heavy loads Zen 5 has absolutely won the argument, categorically.
 
Indeed. For desktop users it’s just a solid platform to finally jump to from AM4. Probably no massive gains from AM4 (unless you’re going from a 3600 to a 9700X3D), but enough ‘reasonably’ priced motherboards and DDR5 are available now to finally tempt us stragglers.

As for price, a small cut isn’t too bad since wafer prices are meant to be high this time around.

Curious to see the wattage for idle, light load and max and the overall efficiency.

I do wish we had some Ryzen Ai mini pcs, but think those are probably due early or spring next year.
 
Ouch, UK pricing will be pretty uninspiring then.
The ticket price on US goods is normally excluding the equivalent of VAT (rate varies state to state but around 8% is typical) so a chip like the 9700X at checkout will likely cost you $388, if a 20% rate was applied the final price would be $430 or £340 which is about where I wold expect it to land. The US pays less in sales tax and products costs less but we get healthcare that free at the point of service but pay more for goods, fair trade IMO.

The Ryzen 370 is faster in heavy loads at 33 watts than my 5800X is at 100 watts, just two generations to cut the power to performance ratio by 70%, that's ____ astonishing.
And the 5800X was a very efficient CPU at the time, Intel's 230 watt CPU could barely keep up with it.
Run your chip at 65W, you would not drop much, that last 5-10% costs a lot of power.
