*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

It is somewhat ridiculous that motherboards launched in Q1 2017 won't support an O/S launched in Q4 2013.

Imagine the uproar if Windows XP didn't support the Core2 CPUs, or if Windows 7 didn't support i3/i5/i7 CPUs.

Scummy Microsoft is scummy.

Yeah, Microsoft has done some strange things with windows 10. As I understand it they're trying to completely change their business model. Taking a leaf out of apples book. Focusing on tying people to a storefront rather than just selling the OS. I hope they don't **** it up and drag PC gaming down with them.

Microsoft decide that they would do everything they could to avoid a Windows XP situation with windows 7. They also wanted to do everything they could to get people on to the Windows 10 platform.

I think it's mostly from a security standpoint. With so many people holding on to XP and thus widening the windows attack surface as a result they wanted to shake this situation out and get everyone on to the Windows 10 platform with its enforced system updates etc... Which I guess raises the bar quite considerably security wise.

Just a little heads up for everyone.

Those are going dirt cheap which is quite surprising, you can pick one up for 65 quid. can make yourself a really cheap dual processor media/render server.

Yeah but how cheap and easy is it to get boards for them?

This was the problem with the X5650 when they were going for £60, finding a good X58 board at a reasonable price was near impossible.

Yeah i see what you mean, although there are some dual socket boards going fairly cheap on ebay as buy it now.

There has been literally no reason to buy a new OS since Win2K. MS are butthurt that nobody wants their botnet so they're shilling as hard as they can by abusing their monopoly status and market position.

Offtopic, but what's the alternative?

- MacOS that is only available with overpriced hardware
- Linux that have been "pushing for the desktop" for the last however many years, but still can't manage to make a user friendly distro (e.g. for my gran or kids to use), that is also suitable for power users and everyone else
- Android - no push to get this to the desktop at present?
- ChromeOS (e.g. chromebooks) - a odd solution, when a scaled up android would work just as well.
etc. etc.

Chrome O/S is getting the ability to run all Android apps "Soon", it's taking a while though, I think they just announced it to burst increase Chromebook sales lol.

This isn't the 90's

He is correct though, XP was just a prettied up version of 2K and the only reason people moved form XP was because Microsoft deliberately withheld feature updates (I.E Direct3D) and then cut support altogether.

Functionality wise there is little that Windows 10 offers over previous versions aside from looks and ease of use (not saying they are not valuable but it's hardly a landmark improvement).

I went looking around for chessbench scores and found a load from a few years ago. apparently it only supports/supported 16 threads. So it hints towards what i posted above with it actually being the score for an E5 2660.
