*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

yes brexit and gouging caused this.

thing is people will think new amd cpus will lower it. they wont.new intel platform will arrive take the place of x99 and carry on charging for it.

If the enthusiast platform is being extended downward as it appears to be, it would benefit from slightly more affordable entry point for boards also, rather than just a more affordable CPU (how I see the KabylakeX 4c8t move). In that case I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of lower specced 2066 boards at least ~20% cheaper than what is available in the current 2011 range.

Damn that looks pretty official. Presumably referencing those 3 different stock coolers that were also pictured today.

There are a lot of SKUs, with these "Pro" variants. ECC finally going mainstream?

The PRO series tend to business class SKUs - looking at the low TDPs,AMD might have a good chance of gaining share in the laptop market. Its when thing trying to get OEMs to use your CPUs if they are lower end Core i3 performance at best, but if you are closer to Intel Core i5 performance but with a better IGP in an SOC design, they might get more interest.

I'm guessing the "XFR" feature (beyond Boost autoclocking) would be too wild for conservative corporate buyers and so will be completely missing from all the Pro SKUs

This looks like Athlon the second coming, like 1999 and the race to hit 1 Ghz.

I would love to see zen on OSX, the pro needs a pro, optional 32 core parts to follow and if the limit is cooling it may be a welcome change, and to have fun with.

I don't buy this 'Intel in a panic' tosh for one second... on the contrary in fact, I reckon they'll actually be thankful for the competition. The engineers sure will... they'll actually have some real work to do and be pushed to make tangible improvements! There will no doubt be some money men and accountants getting a bit nervous, but ultimately competition is a good thing, and I don't doubt there will be many at Intel glad to see AMD back in the mix again... assuming they are of course. ;)

I'm not comparing AMD's 8 core against the 6900K, well i am... but the whole internet is, i don't know where on earth you got the idea that in all these things Zen was being compared to the 6800K, dg?

Anyway.... lets analyse this.

We all know the 6900K boost to 3.7Ghz (Yes DG as with everything compared to RyZen... the 6900K, not the 6800K)

So again:

RyZen 3.4Ghz (boost 'if any' unknown) = 2046

6900K boost = 3.7Ghz - Score = 2095 (+2%)
7700K boost = 4.5Ghz - Score = 2343 (+15%)

So single threaded the 7700K with 1.1Ghz higher clock (+30%) scores 15% higher.

The 6900K with 9% higher clock is 2% faster, the differences in performance between these two with the 6900K being a bit faster clock for clock than the 7700K could be due to it quad channel memory controller, the 7700K is only dual channel.

We have yet to see a RyZen benchmark with its boost turned on, could this be the first one? if so by how much was it boosting? without boost its about 5% per-clock faster than Broadwell with its DDR4, about 10 to 15% faster than Kaby Lake.

Here's my 6850K @ 4.5 for comparison.

i dont buy it either at least on desktop, they already said the future for them is servers and iot rather than desktop, they would panic if their fat margins in those markets shrunk.

Well their server marketshare presumably is at risk, once AMD get this launch out of the way and then point Zen at datacentres.

I'm sure you're right about the engineers but competition is great for the market in general and the consumer, it's not usually good for a company that currently has a monopoly. Sometimes it works out and that company ends up making more profit (e.g. by making better products), but the normal outcome is a loss of market share.

We have to remember that Intel are in quite a few markets so Ryzen won't necessarily interrupt them too much. Naples and Raven Ridge are probably more of a worry for them to be honest.

Noctua have the mounting kits up on amazon in the US now. Bequiet have been sending their kits out for the last week or so as well :)
Noctua already have a form on their website for a free mounting kit upgrade. It has a 2 week delivery time, and you can't get one until you send them proof of buying an AM4 motherboard or CPU. I guess 2 weeks running with a stock cooler isn't too annoying though. :p

noctua appear to have released a NH-D15 SE-AM4 premium-grade ( more expensive ) that is available for delivery tomorrow in the UK, and it only comes with AM4 mounting hardware ...
AM4 mounting kit also listed in the same place

Just over clocked my i7 7700K to 5Ghz and it was very stable at good temps. We'll have to see I guess. No improvement in gaming but it was fun.

^^^^ This.

At the speed these cores are running, they can already fill the pipeline of even a couple of Titan Xs in SLI, without becoming a bottleneck. And the 7700K is just a 4c/8t chip!

My guess would be that the Ryzen 5 1500/1600X will be price-competitive with the 7700K. At 6c/12t, I'd turn off SMT and see how high it can reach with 6c/6t. If it can get to 4.2-4.5GHz it should be just as capable.

Right now, my feeling is that even at 5GHz a 7700K@ won't do much better in since-threaded games. I also think the 6 full fat cores of a 1600X might be unable to take a significant lead (in anything but perhaps the most CPU-intesive and well-optimized multi-threaded games, of which there are not many around yet).

I guess we'll find out soon... Less than a month left for benchmarks.

If Zen is successful and Intel drops cpu prices, will Intel motherboard prices drrop to?

Think that Intel boards cost more then the amd equivalents as the pins for cpu are in the socket as opposed to on the cpu like amd so manufacturing the boards cost more , may be wrong

This is true I believe... or it's certainly a factor anyway. That said, with AMD mobos set to be cheaper, and if performance ends up being as good as hoped, it will be interesting to see what happens to Intel board (and CPU) pricing. If Ryzen delivers on performance, what sensible consumer is going to be paying that much more (and it could be A LOT more) for a new Intel build that performs around the same (possibly worse)?? Interesting times ahead.
