its been a while since I last overclocked. When overclocking, how do you allow the volts to drop down on idle? Which setting is it? Rather than a fixed voltage.

You need to use offset voltage in the bios and windows power plan needs to be om balanced.

But as you know theres reports that balanced power plan interferes with avfs logic performance, so you might see some lose in performance whem not set to high power.
Windows patch should fix this.

This dude has too much sense for the internet. In Deus Ex, 1080p, "the game is certainly GPU bound, even with a GTX 1080, and we could lower the resolution and details; but that's not realistic. I suppose one upside of the 1800X not having much overclocking headroom is that the R7 1700 is even better value. Its lower TDP is translating to lower temperatures and voltages for 3.9-4.0 GHz judging from every report I've seen so far. I wonder if the R5 1600X will have a 65 W TDP also?

Look at the Intel 4C/8T ones and their power consumption, and consider Ryzen is double the CPU with much higher perf with all cores working on the benchmarks.
So we should remove the badge of "Electricity Waster" the FX8350 had and put it on all the 4C/8T i7s. I mean look at the 4790K and the 6700K. Seriously?

I'm hearing that the 1800x has really high idle/load temps.

Anyone running a 360mm RAD ? I have mine sitting here waiting for my CPU and mobo to arrive.

Might be the auto settings pushing lots of volts through as a safety margin. Crosshair auto overclock puts 1.435v through for 3.8Ghz!

It seems so we just need more info re this i am hoping digital foundry guys go into more detail about it ...Just bugs me when we have some of the big reviewers pointing out that they feel Ryzen feels smoother but then not investigating it further ....

I am seriously looking and been browsing the web on hiring a 500 fps+ camera and run tests re this myself if non of the big reviewers can be bothered too..

would u say a 550w psu is sufficient for a 1700 setup?

Easy. For a basic set up with a an overclock it won't be pulling much over 300w
