*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Just reporting in on my tinkering today,

1700X @ 3.9Ghz on Asrock Taichi, offset voltage 7500 ends up as 1.376v under load (LLC set to Auto)
2x16Gb @ 2933 18-20-20-40 1.375v SOC 1.1v

Had a bit of struggle trying to hit 4.0Ghz stable so given that up for now and was working on RAM speeds, currently 2933CL18 is my limit with this 2x16Gb 3200CL16 kit. Not sure what the max safe SOC voltage is, pumping it to 1.1v from 0.9v helped a lot, I think I've seen people at 1.2v but not sure if that's safe for 24/7 usage?

Asus have previosuly said that SOC voltage should not exceed 1.2
What voltage were you trying 4.0 at?

I had a MSI tomahawk originally then upgrade to the crosshair. The difference is night and day. It seems the crosshair is the most popular and thus has the most support from other users. Asus themselves have been talking to the guys in the overclock.net
I can't speak for the asrock boards.
Thanks again for your reply .
Will have a read up on this board to then .

Yes, there was one a couple of days ago - first in a month.

Still doesn't leave numlock enabled
Still doesn't allow for downclocking at idle when overclocking
Still doesn't run memory any better than 2666.

At least they added the ability to disable SMT.

Oh! And some really, really useful setting for performance bias based on what benchmark you are running!

Generally, the boards fine. But I don't hold out much hope of 32GB+ getting much faster than 2666, so am considering just getting some slightly slower 64Gb to last me some time.
If I was cynical I would think they are doing this on purpose to sell the OTT bling boards. Guess after a while one of the manufacturers will update the BIOS on their lower end boards and the others will have to follow. Doubt Asus will lead that though.

MSI have been the same, looking at their ftp the x370 has had more updates then the b350 boards.

When I was trying for 4.0Ghz I was using fixed voltage, I think I went up to 1.425, not 100% sure as I wasn't keeping records at that point. 3.9Ghz was really easy to get stable although had to boost it up a couple times to get it stable with RealBench.

Switched to offset to keep the idle voltages down, I may try for 4.0Ghz again tomorrow, it seems the voltage jump from 3.9 is quite big though.

This is what I experienced also. I can manage 3.9 stable but 4.0 requires a lot more than voltage than I want to put into it. I'm already at 1.4v

I just saw this too, other sites have also done the same, so wondering if this is the new base price, it seams too soon for AMD to put in a price drop =/

Especially considering you can't get a bloody motherboard lol.

bit random that none of the OCUK staff have made a deal post about this?

Also only been out, what 3 weeks, and and 9% decrease in price, AMD are doomed i say,, dooooomed :D

If it's from AMD I would expect because they have so many processors around but no mobos so maybe they're trying to entice people before they get bored and get intel?

I'm tempted to order in advanced just for the savings, was going to buy in April the 8th/9th.

Either way I can't use the damn thing as I want the Gigabyte gaming 7, and a Kraken 62 AIO, but no AM4 brackets.

At the moment i'm trying to work out whether to go for the Corsair Vengeance RGB or the G.Kill RGB memory.

Kinda thinking I might get this crappy thing with the £30 savings and just have a small windows boot m2. and make my 1tb SSD into a drive purely for games.

@Gibbo can you confirm if you're getting in the Corsair Vengeance RGB at any point? Would rather order from you guys if I go for it.

If it helps the G.Skill RGB looks far cooler than the Corsair ones :)

AMD shipped 1 million Ryzen processors at launch.

I'd guess they have flooded the supply chain and for whatever reason it isn't selling as well as they thought it would. Probably lack of motherboards. Memory prices are also up from a couple of months ago.

It doesn't look like American prices have dropped.

The clock speed is quite low. I imagine these will be competing with the Xeon's.
If they're clocked that low maybe but the PC build with the 12 core chip is an Alienware model that uses a Broadwell-e chips not a Xeon. "I will start by saying that the machine detected with this CPU is Alienware Area-51 R3. The R2 (which looks like this) ships with Broadwell i7-6800/6850K processors." If you look at the Alienware Area-51 R2 which this is meant to be the R3 version off it's certainly not looking like a server model.

How different is that with the Intel X series? Do you see many people upset on the streets complaining why their quad core socket doesn't support 10 core CPUs?

Also these are server boards.

Server boards? The graph claims a D for desktop not an S.

Its very strange to say the least

had three 1700 on order from the river peeps for builds... been waiting since the 7th they arrived yesterday but got charged £320 per unit so a little annoyed by that.
after ringing chatting with them no joy trying to get the difference back so i was forced to send back the three which where un opened and reorder another 3 @ £299 ... i was not prepared to loose £60 for the hell of it

Just bugs me that all they had to do is refund me the difference no messing around for me or them .... would not surprise me if i end up with the same three cpu's again...

does not make any sense

Did you have to pay insured delivery to send them back ?
I'd be scared they went missing on route back to retail.

On prime they pick up for free but what's even stranger 1 was picked up and then the other two just a waste of time and effort really when they could have just refunded me the difference :( ... Re missing ...Its there system so there responsible...

Perspective, i think Corsair looks better but G.Skill clearly have the performance advantage.

I was already leaning towards either the CH6 or Gaming 7, and with this "fusion" and supporting corsair ram it definitely is pushing me in that direction.

Yeh it will probably cost them more paying for the returns and sending it back. (AFAIK they always covered the return costs at least for me anyway)
