you can store stuff for FREE in Weynon Priory (Jauffre's chest) if you do the first little bit of the Main Quest. It never goes missing. I've got 3 characters who've had stuff in there for 60hrs + each and nothing's ever disappeared. There's also beds there.

Also, there's free storage if you complete the Thieves Guild Quests and the Mages Guild. I haven't finished DB or Fighters yet though, so wouldnt know.

I always do a little of the Main Quest to start with because it means you become a Blade - and then you get free armour and weapons which are pretty good for a lvl1.

Even fighting in the Arena is a good way to make a bit of cash. Got my first character up to Grand Champion now, so just get battles against Minotaur Lords.

Both very good for money, and using the minotaur lords to fill soul gems (azuras star for me) and recharge magical weapons because they have grand souls.

Where can you buy spells from? im a mage/warrior type character but still using the spells i started off with? (summon skeleton/heal etc)

The best place is people in the mages guilds in all the cities. Also, if you have access to the Arcane University (if you have done the mages guild recommendatin quests) you can make your own spells.

A similar problem that I'm having is that I'm trying to get a weak form of the Silence spell from somewhere so that I can use the spell effect in my own spells and on weapon enchantments. However I can only find the higher level area effect Mute spell available which I don't have enough magicka for. I therefore can't cast it - and until I can cast it I can't use it for enchantments! Does anybody know where I can get the low level version from? I've tried the various mage guilds and they only have the high level ones.

Aha, just did a bit of searching after I remembered finding a good website, have a look here: http://www.gamebanshee.com/oblivion/spells/illusionapprentice.php

In particular, one of the lower types of silence spells is called Hush, which is an apprentice level spell (You should be at least that), and requires 90 magika to cast (at standard, will be lower due to your skill being higher and reducing the magika cost). It can be purchased from either Ita Reinus in Bravil's Mage Guild, or from Jbaana (don't know who that is, have to research them yourself). The website is worth bookmarking for future reference.

the shops sell the lesser spells.. look for a blue sign displaying a hand with an eye on the palm.

Still having problems with a quest bug on my Mage character, its the Ulterior Motives quest, the one wher eyou have to get a book from Janus, count of skingrad.

Ive talked to the man in the castle and he said for me to return tomorrow.

I went and did the paranoid quest and came after about 4-5 ingame days, and he says :

"Has a day passed yet? no"
"Then, as I told you, I dont have anymore information for you, do I"

Can anyone think of anything to fix this?

Did this for me too, but eventually it worked. Just go do a few other quests then come back to him and see if that helps.

Theives guild merchants/fences, or Shady 'Arry (I think that's his name) who stands around next to one of the outside walls of the Imperial City (just run round til you find him). I've never even seen the bloke myself, and yet I know that from all the previous times this question has been asked.

Just bring the console down and type: player.additem 0000000a 100

This will give you 100 picklocks.

Cheating I know but will it will save you from searching all over the place.
