An Elder Scrolls: Oblivion thead

ummm, when i sneak, and look around, sometimes my screen goes black, but i can still interact with items, go into menu, as normal basically, just a black screen with the icon buttons on the cursor when hovered over a item, now, this only happens at random in random locations when sneaking.... anyone got a idea as to what this might be and how to solve it?

It seems to be a bug in the nVidia drivers, commonly reported. I don't seem to have had it for a while, so I think 162.18 may cure it. BTW, it's not random: you always get it at the same spots. I think it's something to do with the shader model, as it seems to be related to certain light sources in the game.

Likely to cause more problems than it solves. As I said, the bug appears to lie with nVidia, not Bethesda, and uninstalling Oblivion sometimes results in you being unable to re-install it.

well ive forced AA and all the other stuff AF etc etc... so i could turn HDR. And i must say the game looks even more beautiful it looks great, its the best looking game ive ever seen.
The only problem is when i go outside it gets really chuggy, so im upgrading my cpu, by ordering a E6850 :D

This game has brought my rig to its knees :( :)

Black screen with GUI present is an nvidia 7xxx series HDR issue. You can get around it by trying nwer drivers or typing in console command "tdt" which will bring back your picture. or on blackscreen save game then reload.

There is another blackscreen too which is encountered in when moving thru doors. extracted from my enormous Oblivion thread which tells you all this anyway.....

"There is a new blackscreen of death since patch 1.2. This one gives no on screen GUI (totally black) with a sound loop. Go to your .ini folder and adjust this command;
iShadowMapResolution=256 to the value of 1024.
That'll fix it."

8800's run maxed dependent on resolution and cpu. My X24400 needs clocking to 2.7 and still slows in cities (spex in sig).

Just in case you did'nt get to read my maHoosive thread on Oblivion go here. By following the links all solutions can be found.

That's not the problem here. The problem is that when you are sneaking, there are certain areas where the screen goes black. Move away or turn around and everything is fine - it's just certain areas and you have to be sneaking for it to happen.

still have the prob, really annoying now, but none the less, cant help playing lol

just sucks as im going through the dark brotherhood quests atm and im a kajit dagger class, with sneak as a major attribute. willl be going through the thiefs guild soon as well, but if i still have the bug its going to be very annoying in places.

also, a bit off the topic, but is it worth joining the mages guild as a stealth dagger, light armor char? and which type of magic should i specialise in, i use restoration a lot (as you can guess) but i want something fun, maybe a spell that takes health and restores, which could get me out of some sticky situations

One of the annoying features of Oblivion to us Morrowind players is that you can play most guilds as any type of player - the only real exception that Thieves does require high sneak. But you can get to the top of Mages without being able to cast a single spell, except for using scrolls.

Just ran fraps and im only getting 7-12FPS when outside making it unplayable :(

that doesnt seem quite right for your card, it should be that bad, turn shadows on grass and trees off and maybe lower the view distance, should notice about at least a 20-30fps gain.

it only happened when i played about on the CCC control panel and forced AA and AAA and AF on max. The game looks amazing but at a huge price to my fps :(

Hi guys, whats the deal with leveling in Oblivion these days?

I've recently upgraded my PC and was thinking about giving it another go and getting the expansion (played it previously to about halfway through the main quest).

However, I remember the leveling system being really counter-intuitive because it was better to try not to level! Has this been altered yet or is there a decent leveling mod - what would you recommend?

Also any other essential mods? Cheers!

ive fixed it all i had to do was go on my CCC and turn AF off, and its back to normal fps now but still looking beautiful.
Also my copy of shivering isles has arrived (still waiting for nights of the nine tomorrow probably) what level should i be before taking on that quest?
Ive found the portal so i know where it is, so no trouble finding it.

in reply to the leveling;
as far as i've worked out the essential deal is that as you level, everything else level up wit you. ontop of this new creatures appear in caves etc.. basically the game gets harder. so yah in some ways it is 'better' to stay at a low level but thats if you want to just breeze through the game.

on the other hand you realize that all the creatures have set characteristics, methods of attack et all where as you can develop a much more varied approach. as you level you learn new skills that further add to your repertoire. eg, journeyman of blade can do a sideways power attack to disarm an opponent.

as i say though, depends how you want to play the game. there are mods that address the 'oblivion leveling problem' should you need them though. OOO is one that springs to mind...

other than that i just reccomend the natural enviroments mod
