An iPad Thread.

No matey i have a lappy myself as my only machine, i just think it will be too big and clunky, the ipad is sleek with a great touchscreen :)

PS On them pictures you quoted i thought the white boxes were slanted, bit of an optical illusion there!

LOL I see what you mean :D How odd...

I'm not planning on carrying it around - I personally think that the iPad is a bit large to be convenient as well but I guess we'll see from other peoples every day use. I think that the form factor is very much going to be the future of personal devices but it will need to compact down to something about half the size for it to be properly portable.

From a sofa surfing perspective the lappy being a little weighty is not going to be the end of the world. I'm more concerned with the responsiveness of the OS and the touch screen.

What does "properly portable" mean? If you need a pocket size device for ultimate portability, Apple's solution is the iPhone or iPod Touch. If you need something slightly larger for home or office use, which can still be easily carried in a smallish bag, their solution is the iPad. If you need a full powered computer with a "full" OS and traditional programs; MacBooks. They are different products for different, if sometimes more subtly different, markets.

For internet browsing on the couch, or in bed, or in the kitchen, I'd love an iPad. Much more usable size-wise than my iPhone, and much less hassle than using a heavy (compared to iPad) laptop with poor battery life.

If iPad comes to the UK with the 16GB WiFi version at £250 I'd consider one. Not at £300+ though.

I have a feeling this thing will be so useful - the browsing and fact I could put all of my research papers in pdf on this for reference will be great. Recipe books in the kitchen in a little dock, lying in bed reading, even having something to just spend a little time cleaning up my inbox which I seems to spend ages doing but now in front of the TV will be cool..oh and of course watching all of 'Lost' again and other series that the missus isn't keen on but I like to get into...all this and the battery life and I think it could be a must have kit for me....all it needs is flash :) which isn't going to happen :P

Indeed. How many times I go to bed wanting to read some pdfs, but have to squint on my iPhone or cant be bothered to get my laptop out. I think this will be the perfect median solution.

it 'seems' like the iPad is doing well in the US since pre-orders are now showing as ship by the 12th of April and not the 3rd. I hope this does not affect the UK release of this due to the apparent high demand in the US.

I was thinking about whether I needed a PC, an iPhone a MacBook Pro and an iPad but perhaps it was wrong to try to shoehorn a device into all the crap I've got and look at it from a different angle.

  • If I'm going to do any serious word processing or CPU-intensive work, I'll use the PC which although is a few years old now is still fairly badass.
  • If I'm out and about the iPhone covers most bases.
  • If I'm mooching about on the sofa half watching TV, I use the MacBook Pro to browse the web and do lots of reading.

If I bought an iPad I would mooch about with it on the sofa while half watching TV in the evening, and I can see it doing a better job at it to be honest. Basically I can see the MBP collecting dust. This is why I find one tempting, but I'm going to wait on the UK pricing before I decide.

Yes, that's how I feel about it as well. I'd like to get my hands on one before I make the decision. If I go that way then my MBP would get sold!

I thought about this myself, then when i realised there was no multi tasking i gave up on it any further.

I was thinking ipad, a mac mini under my tv as a plex center and media server for the ipad or remote for the mac mini. The problem is that i need adium running whilst im browsing :)

I just use Beejive IM, and control Plex though a remote app called HippoRemote.

Beejive uses push, so once I'm signed in I can fiddle with Plex and chat in the background. It's not true multitasking but a good stop-gap.

I've been saying the same thing when people complain about lack of multitasking. I don't miss it on my iPhone and I won't miss it on the iPad.

However......

The way push works on a non-iPhone is starting to concern me somewhat. I had grand ideas of all my notifications (Beejive, Boxcar etc) being sent to my iPad and iPhone at the same time so I could just pick one up depending on the task.

The problem with this, and I'd completely forgotten it, is that the iPad won't have an always-on connection like my iPhone. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but something to bear in mind. I'm assuming that you can tell the screen not to turn off, and that will keep the WiFi running, so maybe that's a way around it.

Like I say, just something that hadn't dawned on me until the other day.

Stephen Fry has one and is now allowed to show off about it! Check his twitter out

I am baring in mind the date but he says it's not the 1st where he is and there's an unboxing vid and lots of app screenshots.

On topic.. I want one, but I'm going to hold off for the reviews.

Same here, I was all set to buy a Kindle not too long ago but I'm going to wait and see how the ipad does.

Same here. I nearly order a Kindle just after Christmas when then became available to us in the UK but by then the rumour of an Apple tablet was in full swing I though I'd wait.

Book store + App Store = Win (for me, other people may disagree)

Just to those who fancy putting your own books on the iPad..

I've already converted my Home Cinema Choice collection of PDFs to ePUB format :)

They're sat in my iTunes library in the books section.

I'm going to get the 32Gb wifi only one. Just waiting for price and pre-order news. Expect it to be around the £500 mark.

I expect the release date for this to be the 24th of April (the last Saturday of the month). Assuming that they are going for a Saturday release like the US. The thinq.co.uk website seems to think it is.
