Yeah, it's not like £300k is enough to start spreading it around anyway. It's the sort of money to buy a nice family home (outside London): it doesn't make you rich.

(it could be somewhat life changing, though. Not having a mortgage to pay would sort me right out)

Not having a mortgage to pay would make a lot of people rich :p thats so much spending money every month :o

My aunt won 27million on the lottery and has given me £300,000 quid. It has been sitting in my bank account for months and I don't know how to tell my wife now that we are loaded as I know her family will be looking a slice of the pie but I'm loathe to give her family a penny as I don't like them. Most of them don't work and sponge off the state and would just spend the money on drink or rubbish. I'm dying to spend some cash but can't as the wife would know and would want to know where I got the cash given we are "skint" in her eyes.

This came with a link to a newspaper adding credibility to the claim. I was asked to remove it and have done so.

Mate I'm up for staging a "win a top spec pc" thread for you so you can buy yourself a nice rig and show the wife if she asks ;)

But yeah you just need to tell her and explain that you'd like some boundaries with how it gets spent as it came from your family.

Give her half the money , and what she does with her half is up to her.....and you keep yours :)

Great idea! I'm sure between us we can fake a simple competition website for anything you want to buy - new car? Holiday?

Reddit wrote up a whole paragraph on "what to do if you won the lottery"

The first and top point was. Don't tell anyone you'll be surprised how people can quickly turn on you....friends family etc.

I think you should just invest the 300k personally. Figure out a way to do it and keep it for a rainy day. Don't fall prey to lifestyle inflation where you think "oh i've now got money I can just spend without worry".

You'd be surprised how fast you could eat up 300k....it's a life changing amount. If I got that i'd instantly not touch it and invest invest invest to turn it into more and also think about the fact you never have to now worry about retirement...

Also her family have ZERO entitlement to that money. It was given by your aunt to you. But just be aware your wife decides to divorce you she will go after half of it. Also if you look at the 6th page post 156... his wife just decides to wake up one day and leave him. Food for thought.... and like I said it'll make your head spin how fast people can turn on you.

Edit: Found the reddit thread, sure you only have 300k and it's not exactly millions but the advice is still applicable too some extent....

How sad to have that little trust for your wife.

We don't live in a Disney film.

I wouldn't tell her...

Instead I would invest it/increase payments on mortgage to pay of quicker/ buy things here and there and so on... and explain it away as a promotion at work or pay increase or something along those lines but anything other than a large amount of money all at once.

You/She then get the benefits of the money without any of the potential pressure to give some to others that come with a single large amount dropping on your lap.

Just tell your wife it's going to be spent on you two only. It was a gift from your aunt to you, not her family.
