Any reason not to get a HTC Desire?

I like to put it this way, iPhone vs Palm Pre. Palm Pre can multi task but it slow as crap and has a tiny screen. There's no way the Palm Pre is a better seller than the iPhone, so multi tasking isn't a top priority for a lot of people.

The Pre has a processor of the same speed as the 3GS, and faster than that of the 2G or 3G, and has been shown functioning, just about, with 50 apps running at the same time. The reason no-one brought one was because it was announced 6 months before it was available in the US, and it was a few months more before it was available in GSM flavours, and just before it went on sale Apple released the next Jesus Phone. It was marketed terribly (Seriously, have you seen those creepy ad's?) and the SDK and PDK weren't available to dev's quickly enough, so they all went to the iPhone or Android (Web OS is supposed to be the easiest of the big OS's to program for). Then there were the early issues of build quality.... Basically it was a mess, and now Palm are paying the price, which is a shame because it was such a good idea at the time...

I put it to you that the 3GS more comparable with the Droid. Processor speeds are again similar, but like the iPhone the Droid was marketed exceptionally, already had an app ecosystem and was launched on a proper carrier, ie Verizon not Sprint as per the Pre.

Now look at the sales of the Droid in the two months compared to the 2G: Source The Droid outsold the iPhone 2G over the first 74 days.

That means one of two things, either AT&T is terrible, which it wasn't back then (Its the iPhones that broke the network with all their data usage, so back in '07 that wasn't an issue).... Or people wanted something that wasn't an iPhone, shocking thought I know :P

I'd love to see someone conduct a study of people who've switched between iPhones and Androids. See how many regretted changing to Android, how many regretting swapping to an iPhone, and how many moved back to their original OS after trying the other.....

Does anyone know whether the Silver one will be released at the same time?

I can only see graphite on pre order at the moment!

Silver one is carrier specific apparently, so I'd be surprised if you EVER found it sim free / unlocked :( Does look nice though, but neither colour is exactly beautiful.... But what do I know, I think the Milestone looks awesome (with the exception of the gold bling bits) :P

guess everyone is too engrossed in the iphone vs android 'fight' to bother to read my posts :(

I had, I've just never owned an HD Touch Pro or whatever its called. My advice would be to find a video on the HD vs iPhone, then the Nexus vs iPhone, the try to judge it by that, as I doubt there will be any direct comparisons, the Nexus is EXACTLY the same size as the Desire

I did wonder about Sim locks, but couldn't find anything conclusive either way on Google. Vodafone Magic's were locked, but my initial gut reaction was there must be a way to break these sim locks by rooting, I just couldn't find anyone who'd done it on the 30 seconds I put into googling it :P

Also, who doesn't love a "spirited debate"? :p

thanks griffo, I'm more interested in knowing if it'll be unlocked or not then if it's the exact same size as the touch hd. as long as it's not bigger or quite a bit smaller, it should fit in the case I have.

like I said places like carphone warehouse and it's affiliate websites(mobiles.co.uk, e2save etc) sell the handsets unlocked(be it contract or payg), was wondering if mobile phones direct is the same. even if it is locked it'll prob work out cheaper buying it on payg and geting it unlocked, compared to the sim free price but would have to wait awhile till an unlock method become available.

I bought my N97 from them and it was unlocked and unbranded. Before I ordered the Desire from them, I emailed them to double check, and this is the reply:

"Good Evening

I can confirm that the HTC Desire will be an unlocked, unbranded device.

I think I asked in regards to a pay monthly deal, but I would assume that it would be the samefor pay and go. I can't see them buying buying loads of unbranded ones, then a few branded, locked ones just for pay and go.

Hope this helps.

Edit: The Touch HD is 115 x 62.8 x 12 mm whereas the Desire is 119 x 60 x 11.9 mm, so the Desire is ever so slightly longer but thinner. I can't imagine the extra 4mm in length would be too much of an issue as far as the case is concerned?

admoo thanks, saves me a few mins googling the dimensions of the 2 phones :)
I'm quite tempted but my mum'll kill me :)
could ask at cex how muh they'll pay for the touch hd, last time I asked was told ~£200.

Whatever phone review im watching on youtube there is always an iphone owner telling everyone else he know best... and that everything else on the market is rubbish..

Its the same in other forums I use for music production with all the mac owner waxing lyrical about there mac's (while most run windows via bootcamp)

oh the ironing :D

Looking at that video, I would say one of the things that pushes me towards this rather than an iphone is the widgets. With android you dont /need/ to load an app, its already /there/ ready to use.

Asked in two different T mobile shops and they both said Desire would be released with them on the 26th March.... But will only have it in after their next delivery date, so more like the 30th/31st in shops.

As with a previous poster im currently using a C902, so whatever I pick will be a nice step up, but really looking forward to the Desire :)

I'm an iphone user, not an Apple fan boy but for me and I imagine most consumers the iphone just feels and works the way its meant to. The Desire does look very good but to get this worked up over a phone that hasn't been released is a bit much. If its the better phone then well done HTC but why not wait until youve used one before making all the wild claims. I've yet to see a hands on video of someone actually doing something other than scrolling back and forward up and down, I don't know about you but I like to do more than that with my phone.

In answer to the op.... the only reason I can think of is nobody really knows how good or bad it is. Wait until you can get your hands on one then decide.

It's pretty much identical to the Nexus One, which is better than the iPhone in almost every way.... so yes, people do know how good it is and that's why people are so interested in it.

I agree that it is a little hard to judge without getting your hands on the phone itself.

However, there are some references that can be used to judge particular aspects. The Android OS itself can be tested and so far the results are good.

Also, hardware wise, it is pretty similar to the Nexus One, so again comparisons can be made.

But generally, it is still only a phone, so a detailed analysis is not necessary. Basically, as long as it fulfils my needs then the rest is just a bonus.

It is more a case of a little excitement over finally finding a phone I really like more than whether it is the perfect phone or not.

Hahaha good luck with finding a smartphone with a.good battery is all I can say :p - I can't name a single smartphone that'll last over a day and a half on a single charge, maybe some BB's?

Really? Not sure I can be bothered getting my first smart phone then. I know a lot of people are just into the routine of charging nightly but that's a bit rubbish imo. My current phone can go a week even with (small) use.

My current phone (N95 8GB) will last 3-4 days with light use or 1-2 days with heavy use, but even so I just leave it on charge every night while it's on my bed side table and I'm in zzz far away land, no big deal at all and it's always 100% in the morning when I need it :)
