Any reason not to get a HTC Desire?

That's a cracking deal, what network is that on?

My contract's up at the end of April, I think I'll make getting this phone a priority.

T-mobile, had to pay something silly like £8.99 for the phone and the cashback is through topcashback, not found anything that comes close to it yet. It will be the first smart phone i've owned, coming from a sony ericsson c902 so should be a nice step up.

hmm no answer to my question about it being locked/unlock for the payg from mobile phones direct, or the question about the size being same/similar to the touch hd.

Sorry, not trying to be condescending.

I'd agree that the first few Android phones were not as good as the iPhone, i got one for the potential it had more than what it was back then. However the newer Android phones that are coming out could be serious competitors to the iPhone.

In the end that's a good thing for users of iPhones or Android. The competition is hopefully going to push Apple to come out with some good innovation on the next iPhone, which again should push Google forward. It's all good for us consumers no matter which you prefer :)

It's the main strength of the iPhone - they control everything - hardware, software, applications, etc. That means they can ensure it's a great experience. I think it's going to limit them in the end though.. they'll likely end up in a niche similar to the rest of Apple's products, rather than being the phone to have as they have been for the last couple of years.

S'okay I tried to ignore the condescending attitude.

I've not really used any other phone other then friends, I have no idea what they are either, a couple of my friends are in to their phones like you folk so I'll see what they use and have a play.

I see no problem with the iPhone, it does everything very well other then battery life.

I think with the App store you're getting a decent product as well, you're not getting it from a random source that could do more damage then good.

I don't get the iPhone multitasking thing either, sure you could have chat open in the back ground, a map tracking thing open and be on the phone while checking an email? but I mean really? is this the sole arguement?

I do check my emails, I don't use chat (understand that people do, but it's a phone just text people), I just don't get the multitasking debate. I personally think it falls flat on its face. Why do you have to have all these things open at the same time? You can only "use" one at a time. If I'm reading a BBC news article on the net, I can close it reply to a text and come back to it. I really don't see the problem.

Anyway it's 3 am and I've just got in.

I won't convert the Apple haters.

Its not the whole chat thing, its more the fact you cant stream radio, youtube (etc) and do anything else at the same time.

Every time you get a text, you have to fully exit your game and load the SMS app, reply, close the SMS app, then reload the game from scratch and then resume. IF your on a 3G your looking at a good 2 mins just sending a 15 second text. Its just annoying.

For example, you cant have a conversation with someone on facebook and send an SMS, change the music you have on, click a link they've send you over facebook without fully closing facebook and loosing your conversation.

So stop trying..

Whatever phone review im watching on youtube there is always an iphone owner telling everyone else he know best... and that everything else on the market is rubbish..

Its the same in other forums I use for music production with all the mac owner waxing lyrical about there mac's (while most run windows via bootcamp)

I was convinced to join the ibrigade... it didnt last long..

Gave my Itouch to my son bought a Cowon S9
Bought a macbook... sold it.. bought a PC

Will never buy anything apple again!!

Anyhooo!!!

Went into T mobile the other day to ask about the Desire and the Legend... they had absolutely no idea what I was talking about!!... they know as much about phones as PC world sales staff know about PC's... nada!!!

What's the difference between the HTC Legend and Desire? The legend looks a tiny bit smaller and lighter so I assume is a cut down version so what does it lack? I have read one review saying that the Legend only lasts a day at best battery life, even if they turned off all of the background running stuff. For me personally, I can't be doing with charging a phone every night and I am used to running my phone for days without charging.

Is the X10 going to be much cheaper than the HTC variants?

I'm under the impression that all Android smartphones need charging nightly if you use any of its smartphone features because battery technology isn't up to the task. If you disable all internet and background apps you will get a better battery life...

The Legend is form over function. It competes with the iPhone in terms of specs, screen res, processor power etc etc. The Desire is a good step up from those again :) Google will tell you the full specs of each

Hahaha good luck with finding a smartphone with a.good battery is all I can say :p - I can't name a single smartphone that'll last over a day and a half on a single charge, maybe some BB's? Best bet would be to get an external battery. In the US, Zagg do something called a zaggsparq that's basically just a massive 6000mAh battery that connects to your phone or ipod etc via usb. 6000mAh is x4 the capacity of the Desires battery so, in total you should get 5 days use from it.

Judging by rumours of US sim free pricing it looks to be the other way round, with the X10 seeming more expensive.... No definite confirmation as yet though.....

I've owned an iPhone since October 2008 and I'm with Tummy on the multi tasking side of things.

True multi tasking is using two applications at the same time. All smart phones don't have the screen space to display two applications side by side whilst still being usable.

Let's take for example, you're on Facebook chat and a friend asks you for the post code of the Starbucks you're going to meet up at tomorrow.

You want Facebook chat open at the same time to give him the details, but the web browser if opened side by side, will be too small to really navigate any page.

So what you'll do, is minimize Facebook and use the browser, switching focus between the two to swap data. This isn't really any different to the iPhone, only the Facebook application closes as you load up Safari.

Not much of a problem as applications such as Facebook load within two seconds and you're good to go again. Only games and data intensive applications take a while to load.

I'm not an Apple/iPhone fan boy, I'm personally going to get the HTC Desire because the specifications are great and Android is a good competitor to the iPhone OS.

I also make a profit on selling my iPhone whilst getting a cheaper tariff.

I like to put it this way, iPhone vs Palm Pre. Palm Pre can multi task but it slow as crap and has a tiny screen. There's no way the Palm Pre is a better seller than the iPhone, so multi tasking isn't a top priority for a lot of people.

Simply having the ability to retrieve/upload data no matter where you are is on today's smart phones, is a god send. Even if it means you need to close an application for the sake of two seconds. Lets not forget the days of non colour screen phones and WAP!

FYI: For those saying you can't control music whilst in another application, you're wrong. You can set the iPhone so that double clicking the home button brings up music controls.

I was all set to get another iPhone 3GS on PAYG until I saw this thread. I'm thinking now pre-ordering the Desire is the way forward. About 40 quid cheaper, OLED and battery should be better than the 3GS.

I think the Desire will be my next phone too. Got just over a month left on my Iphone 3G.

Not sure why there is so much negativity over the Iphone. I can't fault it. Yes the battery life could be better but it gets used a lot. Doesn't crash and works for my business needs. No real reason to change over than I fancy a change.

Hmm, maybe i should convince my dad to get one of these over the iPhone he's got his heart set on... think his contract is up in April some time - isn't that when O2 will be getting them?

Either way he needs something to replace his failing N95.

i just posted on the desire thread

i also dont like apple, but my first smart phone was [and is] the iphone 1st gen,

it was simply the best phone by miles back then, and for all the reasons i do not like apple, they have spurred everone on! i doubt we would have this choice had it not been for apple

now there is choice, i definitly didnt want another iphone, the lack of REAL multitasking, [like exiting web to go to text etc] is annoying, as is no flash support, as well as having itunes, [i havent updated my music simply because i do not want itunes on my new computer ever!] no more apple for me

so ive gone for the desire too, at £25/mth over 18 mths through mobile phones direct, i will not sign a 2 yr contract
for me works out cheaper than buying it and using it on payg

Well, while I am glad to hear that this thread has helped people, it was never intended as Apple bashing :)

To me, the Iphone was never an option, so it was just a case of looking around to see what else was available.

Up until now, not much presented itself, but the Desire looks like something I would like. In the end, it is not worth getting too worked up about it cause it is just a phone. :)
