Any reason not to get a HTC Desire?

The vivaz also has auto focus on hd video but the phone is nothing special imo, the desire records in dvd resolution so isn't that bad compared to some phones.

I'm an iPhone 3G user for over 18 months now and to date it has served me well. My first introduction to the 'smartphone' market and to be honest it does that very well. I would imagine most people don't need true multitasking, they just deal with it because it isn't a problem.

I am, however, at the point where the little niggles with the os and how it operates are starting to annoy me. I really do like the idea of being able to choose a specific song whilst in the middle of something, and not losing it. I like the whole way Android deals with applications and the data and how any app can access it to share between the apps on the phone. I'm also keen on the idea of being able to customise the ui and home screen which you cannot do with the iPhone unless you jailbreak it.

I think I've now got to the point where I've outgrown the closed nature of the os on the iPhone and almost demand that it does what I want, not want Apple think it should be. I have a feeling that aslong as the phone itself is nice to hold and comfortable, then there is no reason why an HTC desire should not be great for me to use and purchase.

forgot to ask before, people have mentioned flash but I've read that 10.1 isn't available for snapdragon based phones(which this and the n1 are). but been reading that it's available on android 2.1(and thus the desire), so what's the situatation with this?

is it worth going from a touch hd(got it flashed with a dutty wm6.5 rom, it's several months old so doesn't have the latest features from hd2 etc that are available on the newer cooked roms. sense and the new manila to name a couple)? or better off waiting for the next batch closer to christmas?

Very well put.

Configurability (is that even a word?) is one of the main reason I want an Android phone.

As for flash, I have read that the Desire does support it, but that the phone being tested was jerky and unstable.

So their conclusion was nice in theory, not so good in practice.

However, they did mention that it was most likely a software rather than hardware problem so it might be possible that future update will sort it.

The Desire has an oddball mix of flash systems, the browser supports 10.1, Android 2.1 supports 10.1 but the phone also comes bundled with flash lite with HTC's Sense. I'm not sure which of those is at work when I watch flash online, but I can confirm I've been able to use Youtube via the website on the shipping Desire ROM.

You could keep waiting, but as with all technology something better is just around the corner, and if you wait for it you'll keep waiting and waiting and waiting for "the" phone for you :p Having said that though, we having nothing more than a name for the next Android build (We don't even know a number) so it would imply its a while off yet.... So at least from a software perspective there's no reason to keep waiting....

I actually can't wait to get a HTC Desire. I preordered mine with MPD, and althought the released date says the w/c 5th April, I'm kinda hoping that it'll be before that

I would go with T-Mobile if you actually get signal with them, I found their customer services to be amazing, though, unfortunately for me, I could get better signal with a brick than on my phone :(

So, how long before you get the e-mail with the credit check lark?

About 53 minutes after completing your order!

Then I got an email saying the phone isn't in stock but should be within 7 days. The credit check's valid for 10 days, so I'm assuming the phone will actually ship before then (likely end of this week/beginning of next by all accounts).

Now, to sell the Nexus One.... (because I want a radio).

Well I have the HTC legend ROM running on my HTC Hero... Its amazing. Fast, nice interface, new features etc etc.

There is certainly no reason to get any other device. I am sold on 2.1 and updated senseUI.

I was wanting the SE x10 but it not touch the Desire in terms of UI/features.

I think i'm going for a T-Mobile contract:

£129.99 for phone, £20 contact, 18 months (300 minutes, free text, free internet)

Totals at = £489.99. The phone is retailing at around £430 which means i'm basically paying £3.33 a month for the contract, which in any respect is AMAZING!

According to some stats I saw a couple of weeks ago Android is the fast growing OS for the smartphone market, going from something like 3% to 7% of the market in the last few months. Its still small potatoes compared to the established players but then it is still early days for the platform.

http://www.intomobile.com/2010/03/14/android-market-share-sees-biggest-growth-in-mobile-os-space-windows-mobile-takes-a-tumble.html

I found the link. Shows that the market share trebled in 3 months to 7.1%

Because most people are on contracts and don't buy new phones except at renewal time then it could take a while before Android reaches all the people inclined to buy one. However with all the phones projected to release this year, including those like the Desire and N1 which are placed to be best in class then this could be the start of the explosive growth as it fills its niche.
