Anyone just given up on looking for a new GPU?

I would not pay much attention to the stuff he says, he contradicts himself and usually shifts the goalposts.

He's the guy that gave us this belter of an opening gambit back in December last year.

In what was extremely obvious to anyone not already rolling down the hill, or in complete denial, we have further confirmation of a 3080ti releasing in a few weeks, with 20GB VRAM.

IMO this will be 'the' card to get, the card that will cope with newer games at 4K without being constrained by VRAM concerns. I think it will also be faster than the 3090

Sue who? Nobody knows for sure who created bitcoin. I'm personally not going to pay £1200 or whatever highly overinflated price for a card especially not buying from Scalpers.

Well the banks of course. Even if the money is in Cayman islands, you still probably can recover the money even if the former account holder didn't transfer the access before expiring. Not so with digital wallets.

In any case, it was proven again you can in fact buy FE for the MSRP with warranty and everything.. At least if you've got Telegram alerts coming to your mobile/desktop and react right away.

We've been banging this drum for months/years now, the miners only see $$$ and nothing negative, borderline sociopathic but then there are worse things happening in the world, the miners gotta have those gold toilets.

Until governments intervene nothing will change (which they are doing to a small extent, and look at that, things changed a little).

To be fair, it would only take a few major companies to stop accepting crypto and the market value gets slashed. Digital cash becomes problematic if it's only used by drug dealers and dodgy porn sites. If reputable places stop accepting it (and it's volatile AF so there is very good reason to!) then it becomes nothing but a bullseye saying "hey, this guy is exchanging crypto for £, he must be into some illegal stuff".

Major companies don't accept crypto, that's not how it works.

= 3080 struggles with 4k games

= 3080 only appropriate for 4k

Should be obvious - 3080 = currently okay for 4k, though scraping the barrel of it's meagre 10GB VRAM.

By the time that poster buys a 3080 (maybe 6 months from now, who knows) - it'll likely not be suitable for AAA games at 4k, without reducing IQ.

3090FE is absolutely worth it, if you can afford it. Best performance, no VRAM issues, also extremely quiet.

So your comment that 3080 is complete overkill and wasted spending if you're not playing at 4k is a load of tosh... how can you say it's complete overkill as a purchase now, but will be useless in 6 months. Furthermore, if you think it has a short lifespan at 4k, all the more reason to say it is an ideal purchase for "2k" and NOT wasted spending if you're not playing at 4k.

Furthermore, I still think a 3090FE is NOT "absolutely worth it" for gamers... unless prices shift dramatically, I can buy a 3080FE and then a 4080FE for less money than a 3090FE, giving me close to 3090FE performance now and then better performance down the line.

You don't need to convince the rest of us that your 3090 purchase was a good choice!

Hey Stu. What GPU are you using?

I upgraded from a 3080 to a 3090. The transaction was profitable (I made money on the exchange), so I'm very happy. 3090 is faster, quieter and has no VRAM constraints. Gaming on my CX48 at 4k and on my Valve Index (2880×1600) meant I was running into some minor VRAM issues in some games, so the 3080 was only ever a stop gap for me.

Also, gaming at these resolutions means every frame is importnat, so the 15% increased performance (on average) is most welcome over the 3080.

Had originally planned to get a 3080ti FE, though was very dissapointed with it's cooler and price, so went with the 3090FE in the end ;)

Anyone else just given up trying to look for a new GPU and resigned themselves to waiting for a while? I'm fed up just endlessly checking stores online and just given up trying. Going to spend my time more constructively online. I'll wait until Easter and try again.

Ha, waiting until Easter. (This post did bot age well)

I for the most part have given up. I just check stores once every couple of weeks or so to get idea of prices. Theyve come down a lot these past few weeks, but still not enough for me to want to get one.

Question: The only RTX 3070 available on OCUK is the Gigabyte Gaming OC for over £900. Is there a voucher for this?

True, stuck with the 5600XT but it#s a cracking card for 1080p

I've got a 3080 FE doing an excellent job running my 3440 x 1440 120Hz display, and I'm aware of lots of happy gamers using the same card at 4k.

Going round telling people that the 3080 is trash at 4k and insisting that people should spend 116% more money for 15% more performance is plain ridiculous.

@Stu what is the 15% performance increase (3090 over 3080) based on? Does it take into account additional VRAM and/or any other features of the 3090?

I don't know a lot about GPUs and have been using UserBenchmark as a guide mostly. I have been informed recently that it's unreliable so I'm trying to compare value for money or cost for performance on current gen graphics cards.

3080 will be just fine if considering they can refine code to be more efficient its not just a simple take. 3090 also fine if you are sick of waiting and somehow the price is doable then happy days but I cant see how 3080 becomes a bad option any time soon, games themselves have to fit the mainstream in their design even MSFS had some improvement recently right

Here's a common source for such info:

Actually managed to place an order for an ITX sized 1660 that's "Temporarily out of stock" on a big retailer site for £205 while it was briefly up for a few minutes.

No idea when or if it will be arriving any time soon but also wondering whether it's worth spending more on a 2060 for that DLSS goodness.

I've had a 3080 on order with them since early May that was the same status, so you'll probably have plenty of time to think it over. :p

Incidentally, I picked up a Sapphire 7970 Dual-X OC for £28 from CeX yesterday. Needed a clean and some new thermal paste, but after that it runs cool and quiet even with an overclock to 280X speeds (and beyond). Hard to beat from a price/performance standpoint.

Yup, months wait if I'm lucky :D

That would be a good buy at usual times, right now that's a straight up bargain!

I’m finally out of this rat race! One more free customer slot for others to get a card.

I have a GTX970 and I upgraded to a 1440p monitor near the end of 2020 in expectation of picking up a 3000 series card. I got the monitor OK…

For the last 8 months or so I have been on a futile quest to get a card anywhere near MSRP. I tried stock watchers, FE launches and even dabbled with running my own script for a few months. Despite the coutless hours I put in, I never managed to grab one of the reasonably priced ones… Many many times in a basket, but never getting to actually pay before they are gone.

Last week I got an alert and to my shock managed to pay and ended up with a new 3070 for £650. £100 over MSRP, but I consider that money well spent to not have me spending time on this anymore.

I definitely spent much more than I was planning to; My budget back in 2020 was £400 tops… Had my eye on a 3060Ti, missed out on that of course. No chance vs the bots. Been having a go at the 3060(nonTi) and 3070s ever since. Only recently there seem to be quite a lot of 3060 (non-Ti) around for under £600 (and they don’t instantly disappear). Way over priced for 2060 performance, but people seem to still be buying them. Even the £700 3060s get sold. For £50 more than a cheap 3060 I get a card 2 tiers higher, Ill take that and run

I gave up twice along the way, good luck to anyone else still hunting dont give up. I suspect that buying will get easier from now on, at least until the xmas rush.

wow that's not a bad price! I've not seen any 3070s at that price apart from the fe cards surely that was a pricing error!
