Anyone just given up on looking for a new GPU?

I’m finally out of this rat race! One more free customer slot for others to get a card.

I have a GTX970 and I upgraded to a 1440p monitor near the end of 2020 in expectation of picking up a 3000 series card. I got the monitor OK…

For the last 8 months or so I have been on a futile quest to get a card anywhere near MSRP. I tried stock watchers, FE launches and even dabbled with running my own script for a few months. Despite the coutless hours I put in, I never managed to grab one of the reasonably priced ones… Many many times in a basket, but never getting to actually pay before they are gone.

Last week I got an alert and to my shock managed to pay and ended up with a new 3070 for £650. £100 over MSRP, but I consider that money well spent to not have me spending time on this anymore.

I definitely spent much more than I was planning to; My budget back in 2020 was £400 tops… Had my eye on a 3060Ti, missed out on that of course. No chance vs the bots. Been having a go at the 3060(nonTi) and 3070s ever since. Only recently there seem to be quite a lot of 3060 (non-Ti) around for under £600 (and they don’t instantly disappear). Way over priced for 2060 performance, but people seem to still be buying them. Even the £700 3060s get sold. For £50 more than a cheap 3060 I get a card 2 tiers higher, Ill take that and run

I gave up twice along the way, good luck to anyone else still hunting dont give up. I suspect that buying will get easier from now on, at least until the xmas rush.

You must have been really unfortunate, I managed to nab a 3070 FE after 2 months of installing the Telegram founder edition stock alerts. In that time I missed 3 drops but managed to bag on the 4th drop. I consider myself quite slow on the notifications too. Much like you I tried holding out for a 3060Ti as it's the king of value-performance card. You can't be too picky so when I saw the 3070 FE notifications I bit the bullet and paid £480 for it. £100 more than my original budget for a 3060Ti but I got a slightly more powerful card that will hopefully age better.

I never tried for a 3070FE, I was still after a 3060Ti well into 2021 until I realised I was wasting my time. The FE launches I tried were 3060Ti, past the capture and out of stock when I got to the site. 3080Ti, got one in my basket, but I didnt actually want one. Too much money and wont fit in my case so let that fish go. And the 3070Ti, which I also didnt want but would fit. As people who were there know there was no drop until about 2 weeks later. I found out about it on here about 30mins after it happened. Considered telegram in recent months, but I have to have my mobile off most of the day during the week.
I could have had a pre-order for a 3070 for £499 in Dec last year for delivery in January, but at the time I was still on the £400 max budget. Obviously that slipped a bit over time :p
Ironically, my mum sent me and my siblings some money over the weekend because she sold an old summer property they have had on the market for a couple of years. I could afford the scalper prices now, pretty ironic. I ordered a new CPU and few other things after the good news. I thought about going top end but decided to just get a 5800x for now (upgrading from 2700x) - yea i checked my board can run it.
Im probably going to build some kind of server too, plan to post something on the forums as need advice on parts and OS.

@Stu what is the 15% performance increase (3090 over 3080) based on? Does it take into account additional VRAM and/or any other features of the 3090?

I don't know a lot about GPUs and have been using UserBenchmark as a guide mostly. I have been informed recently that it's unreliable so I'm trying to compare value for money or cost for performance on current gen graphics cards.

Dave said 15% faster from his experience, so I stuck with that in my reply to him, though many reviews show 14-15% difference when averaged across a selection of modern games typically used in gfx card reviews (thanks to @Twinz for providing a link to one).

Saw a 3070 Ti today For £615. Zotac Trinity. Still in stock now.

That's a good sign isn't it?
Still pretty horrible price/performance compared to the 3060 Ti FE, which was freely available for half an hour or so yesterday. There are quite a lot of cards in stock around the web at the moment though. Pretty much every single model of 6700 XT is available. Just at £200 more than they should be. The big rush to buy up everything at any price seems well and truly over. People simply aren't paying that sort of premium any more for most cards.

couple of places selling 6700xt under £660, but thats still insane imo, 6800 at nearly a grand is bonkers, if folk are desperate then as above stock around

I read 6700xt will develop in time to equal the 3080. I know people still looking but on a budget, how much was the 3060ti freely available for

I still expect a flush out on crypto. A flush to mirror the froth, neither being accurate so it might be brief but I think GPU market will loosen over time. Revenue supply to mainstream not the extremes is what most companies want to do

cant see 6700xt hitting 3080 level myself, whats the 1440p game average around 30%?? maybe the odd game it could. there be riots from 3080 owners if that happened:cry:

Yea that's really good current climate considered.

I paid £600 for a 3070 (regular) on an OCUK forum deal a little while back, and what you've posted is better value.

I'd like to see some 3080 cards for under £800. I'd probably give up my FE drop poaching. Or a 6800XT I'm not picky.

that was a bargain and plenty of people will tell you the 3080FE is a better deal.... which it is.... but its also stupidly hard to get.

Yeah I see what you're saying, it's not much better than saying an AMD card at MSRP is a better deal either.
Nvidia drops may be more common (than nothing at all from AMD), but they're still available only for a short time and have many people waiting to pounce.

Huge drop of 3060 ti's here at OCUK. Pricing is still high, let's see if they hold. Good to see stock appearing and staying!

Very happy with my 3060 performance so far though. Will see how the prices behave over the next month or so.

Dunno - seen 3 bad reviews of the zotac cards re thermals and noise, so maybe thats why they are cheaper or not selling so fast. Also seen some zotac 3080s for just over a grand today retail

I once had a zotac a few years ago and it was like a plane taking off, I ended up getting rid of it
