Anyone non-panic buying?

Former CEO of Sainsbury's on Radio 4 this morning said a VERY LARGE greenhouse in Thanet (Thanet Earth) is currently closed that provides UK grown veg because the Government didn't extend energy price reductions to it. Coupled with a bad Spanish harvest because of weather we have the shortage.

Am I upset that we can't have some out of season veg because we can't fly it in from the Med and won't splash large amounts of cash to heat green houses in Kent. Not really it's an inconvenience not being able to buy under ripe tasteless thick skinned industrial tomatoes, no more.

Tomatoes have gone from £4 a box to £12 a box at our local cash and carry!

Is this Europe wide or just a UK thing?
Prices have gone up but not like that. In Finland for example, small population but huge geographical area (so high transport costs), things were always more expensive than the UK. But seems like not any longer. Not sure how many kgs of tomatoes you're talking about, but it would possibly have been £6 for the box here, and now maybe £7 or £8. There's inflation but no doubling or tripling of prices. Plus no rationing or shortages.

Another case of a Shortage announcement creating a real shortage

I hate restrictions on free speech but I feel this type of reporting (same as loo rolls and fuel) really creates the problem.
Its worse with things like roll as people can hoard due to non perish.

But yeah, its the flip that makes someone go get the item when otherwise they wouldn't.

BRB. Getting some toms!

I'll find the lack of tomatoes and peppers a bit annoying to be honest but I'll just have to cook other things.
usually find that out of season imported tomatoes, celery do not taste as good as the UK in season stuff ,
pm yesterday had folks from both germany and france who said they have no supermarket issues, brexit will re-educate our palates.
locally sourced battavia lettuces in french supermarkets always tasted good, as does in season fenland celery, both with some mud still on them.

Aldi was an egg desert on Tuesday AM, need to revisit today.

I've known about this for a few weeks, same with eggs, but it's just temporary. Once the UK season kicks in, it'll be fine.

It's funny that the supermarkets won't pay more to the farmers but are happy to increase costs for the consumer.
Support your local farmer if you're lucky enough to have one.

Supermarkets as the big customers have a lot of power and always do things like this to increase their own profits. Tesco made 2.5 billion in profit last year and is expected to do again this year, even during a crisis.

When there was the driver pay/shortage issue, that problem was also created by the supermarkets. They set a price for their British suppliers (farmers, slaughter houses, logistics companies), and if they cannot meet it their suppliers lose the contract and could go under. So the suppliers like logistics have to suck it up and then pay their staff badly in order to stay in business and make a profit themselves. EU drivers were blamed for pushing driver salaries down, but it simply wasn't true. When driver pay then went up, so did the costs of things in the supermarkets (and other businesses that relied on deliveries), so we all paid for this increase and and at no point did Tesco (or other businesses) consider less profits.

There is some outrage about Veganuary because of this. January obviously one of our worst months for producing good quality veg.

Is there any point panic buying fresh produce (ie fresh fruit and veg)?

It isn't like you can just buy a ton of it and store it for months.
