AOC G2460PF

No problem - I think you need to take my view with a pinch of salt - I'm a big fan of IPS screens and this feels like a big dip in image quality for the same of smoothness.
Terminator I'm just curious and want you clarify on one thing...when you say you felt the TN feel washed out comparing to IPS, is it really just TN vs IPS, or could it be partly because of 1920 res vs 2560 res (I am just assuming most of the IPS monitors you've experience with would be at that res)?

Nope - nothing to do with resolution.

I have used a Asus MG279Q @ 1440p (that was really nice but bad backlight bleed and limited freesync range - that went back) but I'm comparing it side-by-side to a Dell Professional P2314H 60hz IPS monitor (which is 23", 1080p) and that runs rings around it.

I'll try and capture it in a photo tonight if possible....

So so so tempting....

Just looked at my screen specs and it has 5ms respnse time!!!! and its a TN panel. I'm disappointed with myself.

EDIT*

And I've brought it, Didn't want to wait any longer. Would like it here for the weekend to have a play with it so bit the bullet. I'm upgrading from a cheap TN panel so hopefully the image quality will be fine to me because I dont know any better :P

Cool - let us know what you think Finners!

I'm particularly interested to know if you also have the overdrive feature greyed out / disabled in the OSD menu when you are running the screen at 144hz.

Played alien isolation on mine last night. nice and smooth with freesync on a 290x. Way to bright out of the box, so i set brightness to 0 contrast to 25 and game mode off.
One thing that concerns me, it draws 70ish watts under any setting compared to an Asus 24" TN next to it at 20 watts.

Ouch - I'll have to test it on my smart meter tonight and see if I get the same - 70 watts is excessive!

Is your overdrive greyed out / disabled in the OSD when the run the monitor at 144hz?

Hi all, i have been lurking here for years.. anyways i thought i would add my input. i received this monitor 2 days ago, after mounting it, i finally got the chance to test it last night and can confirm that 120hz and 144hz leaves overdrive greyed out. 60 does not, however i have not had the chance to test any other refresh rates.

EDIT: i almost forgot after turning on the monitor and starting up MGSTPP, after going into the options and changing from border-less window to full screen. there was massive amounts of display corruption.
The image appeared split backwards - the left half of the picture was on the right and the right on the left, with horizontal lines across the screen. it appeared worse at the bottom.
similar to what appears to have happened here: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/3m24q9/monitor_flashing_and_image_corruption/
after exiting the game and powering off the monitor and back on again, everything was back to normal.

Thanks Henson - definitely looks like it isn't an isolated problem then.

Any news PCM - have you had a response from AOC yet at all?

I did some more tests last night and took some more photos which I'll post up later.

Using the catalyst control panel to lower the gamma curve between 0.75 and 0.90 seemed to help the image quality a little - not masses but noticeable anyway.

I did the power usage tests and observed a huge difference between 60hz and 144hz...

60hz consumed about 20-30 watts when the monitor was on

144hz consumed over double this at 70 watts!! I don't know if this is the monitor drawing this much or the graphics card which causes it as I don't have another 144hz monitor to compare it with.

Nothing from product management yet, but it usually takes a few days for their response to be filtered through to me. Especially if it is an issue like this which will require a few others to be contacted in a form of investigation.

Regarding power usage. Whack the monitor into 120Hz so the graphics card calms down and compare power usage. The main power drawer in a monitor is the backlight, it doesn't usually require considerably greater power to drive up refresh rate. Certainly not as much as you're seeing here at any rate.

I did some more testing on the monitor power draw. 144hz maxes my gpu memory clock in idle causing more power usage and higher idle temps.

What GPU do you have?

If 144hz makes it so my GPU doesn't enter the lowest power state I might just send the monitor back without opening it.

It is not an issue specific to this monitor, it is a well known issue affecting all 144Hz monitors. If you do have the issue it would apply to any 144Hz monitor. Simply run it at 120Hz with minimal loss of performance (more so if you don't actually run games at over 120fps) or switch between refresh rates depending on task (desktop or gaming).

Thanks for confirming that - in short, it's a graphics card issue rather than the monitor suddenly sucking down extra juice?

Thank you,

That's disappointing, feels like 144hz monitors have been around for ages and its annoying simple issues like this still exsist.

Yes. And I too am surprised this clock issue hasn't been fixed. It has been an issue for as long as 144Hz have been around, certainly since I first reviewed a 144Hz monitor back in early 2013. It seems to affect AMD GPUs more often, which obviously would be the natural choice for a FreeSync monitor. But it's nothing to worry about related to the monitor itself.

quoting myself here, but is this anything to be worried about at all? PCM2 i see you are able to directly talk to AOC, is this something you could possibly ask them to comment on or not? i am wondering if this is a defect and should the monitor be returned? i appreciate any response.

This sounds like a GPU issue, not a monitor issue. And if it doesn't occur with FreeSync disabled then it's really nothing to worry about.

Thank you for the reply, i will double check with FreeSync disabled when i get home and see what happens.

My gpu is the msi r9 390, i did not get the same issue with a dell sp2309w or sony bravia 32 tv and so you could be right.
